Call of Duty’s push for crossplay is exactly what the industry needs

Activision today confirmed that the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will have crossplay on all of its consoles, from launch. It’s a watershed moment for the people who’ve been pushing for more crossplay in mainstream games — and, with a game this popular paving the way, it’ll likely only become more common now. To be clear, we’ve known for a while that developer Infinity Ward intended to put crossplay in Modern Warfare, just not how it was going to work and with what systems. The open multiplayer beta, which was shown today, will launch in two parts this September. The first…

Activists created a free font made from gerrymandered US voting districts

Ugly Gerry is a new, free font created by a pair of activists apparently fed up with the US government’s practice of gerrymandering voting districts. Every letter in the font is composed of images of gerrymandered US voting districts. Comcast-owned Xfinity Mobile will now charge subscribers an additional $20 a month to stream HD video. The change first started about a year ago, when it capped video resolution for mobile subscribers to 480p. Customers, until yesterday, could call in and ask that the limitation be waived at no cost. For Xfinity Mobile subscribers, the bad news doesn’t stop there. The company also plans to remove the 480p streaming cap from its “by the gig” plans, an obvious nudge toward paying for each gigabyte used. In fact, the company dropped the price on these plans, charging customers $30 for 3GB…

Google will help you get aid from 911 without speaking

While we all hope to never be in a situation where we need to call 911, being able to relay the right information to emergency operators is crucial. Unfortunately, sometimes you might be caught in a situation where you can’t actually speak to the operator – perhaps because you’re in immediate danger or your speech is impaired. Google’s new 911 feature is meant to address these situations. Using the speech technology seen on Duplex and the Pixel’s call-screening technology, Google will be able to point the operator to your location and the type of help you need – medical, fire,…
