The Naim Mu-so Qb 2 is a compact streaming speaker for audiophiles

It was just a few months ago that I wrote about the Naim Mu-so 2, an update to one of the first high-end streaming speakers. I’m currently in the process of testing that model, and it delivers remarkable sound quality in a soundbar-like body. But for many spaces, it’s kind of overkill. For those places, Naim now has the small Mu-So Qb 2nd Generation. I’m just going to call it the Qb 2. Naim is a premium audio company. The Mu-so 2 cost $1,600, so it’s not surprising the smaller Qb 2 comes in at a staggering $899 price point.…

NYU researchers made mice smarter by manipulating their brainwaves with light

Researchers from the New York University School of Medicine recently developed a method for manipulating brain waves with light to improve learning. The results of the team’s study are incredible – laboratory mice exposed to the new technique showed marked improvement in short-term memory – but the implications of their findings could radically alter the scientific perception of how the brain works. We may not be talking about ‘beaming’ knowledge into our heads yet, but it’s possible we’re not far from a science-based method for instantly remembering things like why in the hell we came into this room in the…

Discord launches its own mini-livestreaming service

Discord today announced it’s premiering its own internal livestreaming feature, appropriately titled Go Live. It’s essentially a very small video stream where a few friends can comment on your gameplay — but it sounds like a fun alternative to other livestreaming services. Go Live lets Discord users broadcast their gameplay over a voice chat channel in a server. Up to 10 people in the chat room can watch you play. This update adds a game bar to the bottom of your server’s room list. It shows what game you’re currently playing and the Go Live button. Once you go live,…

Researchers uncover a new piece of RAT malware that targets cryptocurrency users

Researchers at Zscaler ThreatLabZ  have identified a new remote-access trojan (RAT) called Saefko, which retrieves Chrome browser history in a search for cryptocurrency-related activity The RAT, written in .NET and available for sale on the dark web, also looks for information relating to other activities involving credit cards, business, social media, gaming, and online shopping. For context, a RAT is a type of malware that features a backdoor, enabling perpetrators to remotely control a device. By remotely controlling a device, the intruder is able to surreptitiously monitor user behavior, access confidential information, activate a webcam, take screenshots, and format drives, among other things.…

The tech media keeps hyping awful, exploitative fintech products

Aug09

Posted In: Around the Web, Opinion

I’ve long espoused the belief that the entire tech press corps deserves to be quarantined on an isolated island in the South Pacific, where they don’t have phones or the internet. No exceptions. It’s a bit extreme, but it’d spare the rest of humanity our collective incredulous, fawning fuckwittery when it comes to crap tech brands. Not sure what I mean? Just look at the reaction to the new Apple credit card, which has been hailed as “disruptive” and a “game changer,” even though it’s just a normal credit card attached to a fancy app. The most embarrassing specimen of…
