Chinese phone brand OnePlus announced today that it will launch a smart TV next month, and it’s called the OnePlus TV (color me shocked). The smartphone maker didn’t provide any other detail regarding the device, but said it’ll follow its “burden-less” design philosophy: The OnePlus TV is an extension of the brand’s ‘Never Settle’ mindset. The OnePlus TV will feature smart capabilities coupled with the company’s ‘burden-less’ design philosophy to offer users a smooth and connected experience.  OnePlus’ rival Honor launched its VISION smart TV with a pop-up camera last week at Huawei‘s developer conference. Meanwhile, Xiaomi has been selling…

Amazon’s facial recognition mistakenly labels 26 California lawmakers as criminals

As government agencies continue to push for the deployment of facial recognition systems, you needn’t look far to see why that’s bad news. To illustrate the point, the ACLU conducted a test of Amazon’s Rekognition software — facial recognition tech currently being used by US law enforcement — in which it incorrectly identified 26 California lawmakers as matches in a criminal database. We’ll pause while you chuckle at the “politicians are criminals” jokes running through your head. It’s the second time the ACLU has run this type of test. In the first, a test conducted last year, Rekognition was wildly…

Facebook paid people to listen to and transcribe your voice clips

Facebook doesn’t need any more bad press, but here we go again. According to a report by Bloomberg, the company paid hundreds of contractors to transcribe audio snippets from your conversations within its services – without making it sufficiently clear these clips were being recorded. Other tech giants have done similar, but that doesn’t make the practice any less problematic. The employees interviewed by Bloomberg say they do not know where the audio was recorded or how it was obtained, only that they were supposed to transcribe them. These clips sometimes included “vulgar content.” Facebook confirmed to Bloomberg it had…

Review: Akaso’s V50 Pro SE 4K action camera is a GoPro alternative at half the price

Akaso’s V50 Pro Special Edition action camera is a wallet-friendly little action shooter that punches well above its weight class. If you’ve been searching for a decent-quality 4K cam you can  use underwater, but you don’t want to spend GoPro money for it, keep reading. The V50 Pro takes aim at the GoPro Hero 7 Black, but costs half as much. The Special Edition brings 4K video at 60 frames per second and more batteries and accessories to the table. And it’s worth mentioning that a portion of every sale benefits The Center For Outdoor Ethics’ “Leave No Trace” campaign.…
