The United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has settled a fine with a Russian firm that was pushing initial coin offerings (ICOs) without disclosing the fact that it had accepted payment to do so. Late yesterday, the SEC announced it has reached a $268,998 settlement with ICO Rating. According to the SEC, ICO Rating promoted cryptocurrency projects between December 2017 and July 2018 – the infamous boom period – that should have been classified as securities. As a result, ICO Rating should have disclosed the fact that it accepted payment to promote some coins and tokens. ICO Rating positions…

Facebook’s controversial ‘cryptocurrency’ Libra is facing a competition probe by the European Union Commission, according to a document seen by Bloomberg. The European Union’s antitrust regulators are “currently investigating potential anti-competitive behavior” amid concerns Facebook would monopolize the payments realm and unfairly shut out competitors. Unsurprisingly, regulators are worried about Libra creating “possible competition restrictions” on the customer information that will be exchanged and the use of consumer data. This investigation follows on from another preliminary probe led by the EU that’s looking at how Facebook could potentially use its power to shut out the competition. The Libra Association, tasked…

Intel has unveiled two new processors as part of its Nervana Neural Network Processor (NNP) lineup with an aim to accelerate training and inferences drawn from artificial intelligence (AI) models. Dubbed Spring Crest and Spring Hill, the company showcased the AI-focused chips for the first time on Tuesday at the Hot Chips Conference in Palo Alto, California, an annual tech symposium held every August. Intel’s Nervana NNP series is named after Nervana Systems, the company it acquired in 2016. The chips were designed at its Haifa facility in Israel, and allow for training AI and inferring from data to gain valuable insights. “In an AI empowered world, we…

Ever made a typo in an email so bad that your life flashed before your eyes as you sent it? Worry not, Google‘s making sure it doesn’t happen again with a new update for Gmail that’ll point out basic spellings and grammar mistakes as you type. The update, presently rolling out for G Suite users on web, will use AI to point out errors in your email. If you’ve made a slight typo, Gmail will automatically correct the spelling for you. For grammar mistakes, Gmail will show a squiggly blue line under the erroneous phase. If this sounds familiar, it’s because…
