UK police raised £300,000 ($369,000) through the auction of criminally-seized Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency this week, achieving over market value. The sales, a first for UK police, occurred across two unreserved auctions that were finalized on September 26 via Irish firm Wilsons Auctions. In total, 62 lots of cryptocurrency were sold, which included Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, and Bitcoin Satoshi Vision. Data shared with Hard Fork reports Wilsons Auctions fielded 7,500 bids from across the world, including Brazil, Australia, Dubai, Canada, Singapore, and the USA. On average, 1 BTC sold for £6,798.80 ($8,365), 0.5 BTC for £3,443.68 ($4,236), and 0.25 BTC for £1,972.74 ($2,426). The…

This broomstick version of Rocket League is making my Quidditch dreams come true

Sep27

A game called Broomstick League surfaced this week, and what in the name of Harry Potter is this extraordinary Quidditch game and where can I get five of it? Okay, it’s not Quidditch, not really. Broomstick League is developed by Virtual Basement and published by Blue Isle — there’s no relation to anything Warner Bros, so any mention of Quidditch would no doubt be copyright infringement. But you and I are free to draw the parallels on our own. It’s a game in which two teams of wand-carrying people on broomsticks compete in massive stadiums by throwing balls into hoops, so it’s hardly a…

Binance says it buddied with UK police to catch crypto criminal who stole $51M

Binance has said it collaborated with UK police to uncover a criminal who earned more than $51 million (£41.6 million) by selling phishing scripts on the dark web. The exchange shared the news in a blog post, stating that it had worked with the Cyber Crime Unit of the UK‘s Metropolitan Police Service earlier this year. The phishing scheme was orchestrated by a Bulgarian suspect, which targeted customers in at least 53 different services. Other criminals were able to purchase and use scripts to obtain personal information about customers by imitating legitimate companies It’s believed some 500,000 people were affected, most…

The sad and peculiar case of Satowallet’s alleged $1M cryptocurrency exit scam

Sep27
by Sindy Cator on September 27, 2019 at 12:58 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, blockchain, cryptocurrency, Hard Fork

Nigerian cryptocurrency startup Satowallet has exit-scammed, making off with $1 million of its users’ money, reports International Business Times. According to company CEO Samuel Ben, however, the firm isn’t responsible for those losses. Instead, he says Telegram scammers tricked users into handing over access to their funds during an extended maintenance period. Ben also claimed the pesky scammers returned to steal more funds when Satowallet attempted to establish Know-Your-Customer policies earlier this year. Eventually, he firmly passed the buck to its hosting provider OVH, publishing rather peculiar claims in a blog. Unfortunately for Ben, Satowallet’s Medium page has been suspended,…

Waterfield’s leather messenger bag gives my gadgets the treatment they deserve

San Francisco-based bag company Waterfield has been in business since 1998, making a range of storage gear in small batches in the city. I’d heard of the brand and its penchant for quality over the past couple of years, and was glad to see for myself when Waterfield sent across its new Executive Leather Messenger bag. This is a seriously luxe affair, made of leather and built to lovingly hold your gadgets while you jet around the world. It’s exceptionally well made, so you can expect it to last for years to come. It also costs upwards of $380, depending…
