Opening a File from a Userform Disables Ribbon

In Excel 2019 16.0.10361.20002 32-bit, when I open a file from a userform (which for me is always), the hotkeys on the Ribbon don’t work. Here’s how I reproduce:

In a new workbook, add a userform named UserForm1. Add a commandbutton to the userform. Paste this code in the userform’s code module.

Private Sub CommandButton1_Click() Application.RecentFiles(1).Open Unload Me End Sub

Add a standard module to the workbook and past this code into it.

Public Sub OpenRecent() UserForm1.Show End Sub

Close the VBE and return to Excel. Press Ctrl+F8 and run the macro and click the button. Now press the Alt key. I don’t get these guys:

If I Alt+Tab away and back, they show up again. If you launch the form from the VBE, you have to Alt+Tab to get to Excel so the test doesn’t work.

Also, I hadn’t tried this until just now, but I can’t even click on the Ribbon with mouse. Nothing happens. My next tack is to close and unload the userform before opening the file and see if that takes care of it. It’s odd though. It’s the only odd thing in 2019 and building up a pretty nice rant about it. Two posts in one year? Yep, it could happen.

So you like TNW? Then join our upcoming online event, TNW2020, you don’t want to miss it. Nintendo has purportedly boosted production goals for its smash-hit portable gaming console, the Switch, raising the bar to as much as 30 million units for the fiscal year. Bloomberg reports the Japanese giant has asked its assembly partners to increase production by 20%. That is the second time the company has recently raised its production orders after it bumped the number to 25 million earlier in August. But that number has since proven insufficient. Google blames faulty algorithm for blurring Hong Kong protest graffiti on Street View

Google has blamed an algorithmic error for blurring out protest graffiti on the Street View map of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Free Press (HKFP) reports. The news site reported yesterday that two spray-painted slogans on Nathan Road, the main thoroughfare in the urban area of Kowloon, had been obfuscated on Google Street View, which was updated in Hong Kong last year. According to HKFP, one read “Xi Jinping must die for the sake of the world,” while the other said “liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times.” However, both of the messages could be visible when viewed from further down the road.…

8tracks wants to become your favorite place to discover new music all over again

During 2012-15, when there were only a few streaming services in India, it wasn’t easy to share music, or discover new music. One of the cool ways show to off that you found some previously unheard music from the depths of the internet, was to make playlists on 8tracks and share them on Twitter and Facebook. Even in other countries, few streaming services had robust mobile apps with state-of-the-art AI to suggest a long list of songs, one after another. So, 8tracks was the cool kid on the block with ‘DJs’ trying to create their own playlists with whacky names and…
