Time crystals could be the miracle quantum computing needs

Scientists at Aalto University in Finland recently published research indicating “time crystals” may hold the key to creating a quantum computer that doesn’t require near perfect-zero temperatures to operate. There’s a reason you might not have heard of time crystals: they’re a wickedly difficult concept to explain. Which makes them perfect for the advancement of quantum computers. Both are weird and wacky, and if you believe the scientists studying them, absolutely crucial to furthering our understanding of the natural world. Time crystals are utterly ridiculous, yet they were proven to exist in January of 2017, and confirmed in two independent…

I’ve never bothered to ask my dogs about their political leanings. Gun to my head, right now, I couldn’t answer whether my beagle was for or against capitalism. I’m not sure how she feels about trickle down economics, or if she’s even aware of who Saint Reagan is. Or, maybe I just don’t give a damn. As a writer who routinely covers some of the dumbest shit in existence, I may have met my match in a Twitter account where each of its 8,000 members presume to know the political leanings of their dogs. And these dogs, according to their…

The signature of your emails may be a part of the message you don’t think about very much. After all, there are so many tips about composing the body of an email that the signature might seem like a mere afterthought. Tencent teaches AI how to un-blur your photos (and give you a mustache too)

In the early days of photography – which include the period between the birth of the camera and the launch of Google’s Pixel 2 last year – you had to actually be somewhat talented to get successful images. Now, thanks to AI, you can pretty much randomly smash the shutter button and end up with magnificient pictures. Tencent, a Chinese tech giant, wants to take that even further. The company recently unveiled two breakthrough AI systems for manipulating images. One removes blurriness and the other changes the age, mood, facial hair, or a number of other facial features of an…

A cryptocurrency enthusiast has created a candy dispenser that accepts payments in bitcoin. The device, christened “sweetbit,” works by listening for incoming bitcoin transactions through blockchain.info and dispenses equivalent amount of candies. The dispenser is supported by Arduino Micro, a micro-controller which allows the device to be controlled through USB. You can watch it at work here: Just finished my Bitcoin-enabled candy dispenser 🍬 pic.twitter.com/pU2xJdBIyx — David Knezić (@davidknezic) May 27, 2018 Its creator, David Knezić, says that he created the device to demonstrate how easy it is to integrate bitcoin payments. He has made the code public on Github. While…
