Imitation training could finally make robot butlers a reality

From The Jetsons to Bicentennial Man, a common threat running along popular culture is the idea that one day, robots would perform the household chores that we all find so deeply tedious. Numerous barriers prevent this from becoming a reality, sadly. Perhaps the biggest is that robots lack the innate intuition that humans do. It’s this intuition that makes us expert problem solvers. Let’s suppose we’re in an unfamiliar kitchen, and you ask me to make you a cup of tea. Even though I may have never used the particular kettle before, and I may not be entirely sure where…

Leak: Motorola One Power brings the notch to Android One

Though Motorola has announced plenty of phones with small bezels – with more seemingly on the way – it’s so far avoided the trendy iPhone X-style display cutout. Until now; a leak by Android Headlines suggests Motorola is working on a notch-tastic phone called the Motorola One Power. The leaked image shows a phone with a rather obviously Apple-inspired design; it looks like an iPhone X and iPhone 7 had a baby. It has a metal back, but vertically aligned cameras. There are thin bezels throughout, although there’s a substantial notch up top and thick lip at the bottom. Meanwhile,…

Sony considers joining the nostalgic console race with PS One Classic

It seems Sony is considering jumping on the classic console hype train — somewhat. While you probably can’t expect to see a PS One revival console on the shelves any time soon, the company is interested in the idea and looking into how it could be a reality. In an interview with Mantan Web, Sony Interactive Entertainment president Takeshi Kodera said the company wasn’t ruling out the possibility of a classic console in the vein of the NES Classic. He said (shoutout to Twitter user bk2128 for the translation): Our company is always digging up past assets, and I think there are…

Time crystals could be the miracle quantum computing needs

May29

Scientists at Aalto University in Finland recently published research indicating “time crystals” may hold the key to creating a quantum computer that doesn’t require near perfect-zero temperatures to operate. There’s a reason you might not have heard of time crystals: they’re a wickedly difficult concept to explain. Which makes them perfect for the advancement of quantum computers. Both are weird and wacky, and if you believe the scientists studying them, absolutely crucial to furthering our understanding of the natural world. Time crystals are utterly ridiculous, yet they were proven to exist in January of 2017, and confirmed in two independent…
