Cryptocurrency startup TRON has acquired BitTorrent for $140M

Peer-to-peer trailblazer BitTorrent has purportedly sold its business to blockchain startup TRON for a fee of $140 million, TechCrunch reports. The publication notes details are still being worked out and shareholders are yet to sign off on the deal definitively, but it is unlikely negotiations could fall through at this point. TechCrunch suggests the holdup has to do with a dispute over who made the introduction between TRON CEO Justin Sun and BitTorrent. The story first started to shape up when last month TorrentFreak learned Sun was in the process of acquiring BitTorrent. Variety then confirmed that the deal had been finalized…

How Ring went from Shark Tank reject to Amazon’s $1B acquisition

Just five years ago, wireless doorbell company, Doorbot — now Amazon’s billion-dollar Ring — was a team of eight struggling to make ends meet in CEO Jamie Siminoff’s Pacific Palisades garage. Desperate for investment, Siminoff took a gamble and applied for season five of ABC’s ‘Shark Tank,’ where he’d try to convince several multi-million dollar tycoons to invest in his concept. As Siminoff explains on his blog: “We had a good product and a great mission ‘to reduce crime in communities,’ but that alone wasn’t getting us where we needed to go. We applied to Shark Tank with the hope that…

You can now play Pokémon on the blockchain

Developers are finding new fun ways to test blockchain technology. Software engineer João Almeida has created Poketoshi, a platform that lets you play Nintendo’s iconic game Pokémon via the Lightning Network. The game is hosted on live stream video platform Twitch and works just like the rest of ‘Twitch Plays Pokémon’ games. The games work by reading commands entered into the chat room by users. In Poketoshi, the commands are instead entered through a Lightning-enabled virtual controller. The users can enter a set of commands through the controller and have to pay 10 Satoshi per command through Lightning Network. The payments are…

The EU’s disastrous Copyright Reform, explained by its lovers and haters

The EU’s extremely controversial Copyright Reform — which might introduce upload filters, ancillary copyright, and restrictions on text and data mining — will finally go to a vote on June 20. It’s not certain how the vote will go as members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are still split on key articles of the reform, but whatever the conclusion will be, it’s certain that it’ll greatly affect the future of the internet in the EU and beyond. The result will form the EU Parliament’s stance on copyright and will have huge implications for the final stage of the law making…

GitHub for Unity exits beta to simplify source management in game development

Jun19

Posted In: Around the Web, Design & Dev

Modern software development workflows are built around Git (and to a lesser extent GitHub). That said, not all projects are created equally, and depending on what you’re doing, using Git can be pretty hard. Those working in games development, for example, may struggle with Git, due to the fact that they have to manage large binary files, like visual and audio assets. GitHub has tried to address many of the pain points faced by game devs with GitHub for Unity, which today exited beta with its 1.0 release. Announcing the release of GitHub for Unity 1.0 featuring the git workflow…
