Apple brings True Tone to (some) external monitors

As an Android and Windows type of guy, I’ve been jealous of True Tone on Apple devices. The feature, which adjusts your display’s white balance to match ambient lighting, was rolled out to macOS for the first time with Apple’s new Macbooks. But it turns out its coming to external monitors as well. As pointed out by the Verge, Apple published a support document today which lists three external displays that can use True Tone: the Apple Thunderbolt Display, the LG UltraFine 5K Display, and the LG UltraFine 4K Display. For those not familiar, True Tone aims to make displays…

Techies leave the likes of Apple and Amazon for greener pastures in the cannabis industry

Amazon, Google, and Microsoft have all suffered black eyes in the media as reports each were individually involved in dubious government projects have unfolded. If you’re a tech worker who is embarrassed to be seen in such amoral company, we’ve got a suggestion: consider selling weed instead. When California legalized recreational adult cannabis use, experts predicted a market bonanza. And, so far, they’re not wrong: the US cannabis market is expected to be worth over $25 billion by 2021 – more than video games. In order to make those ‘big cannabis’ dreams come true, startups are turning to a tried-and-true…

Photoshop is reportedly coming to the iPad – for real this time

Jul13

Adobe might finally bring a complete Photoshop app to mobile devices, iPads in particular, by next year. If so, it’ll have to offer tools that will adequately compete with a large selection of photo-editing apps that already provide similar services. A report from Bloomberg, released today, revealed Adobe executives are planning to bring the full Photoshop experience to iPads, though no one has yet given a specific date for when that’ll eventually happen — sources claim the app could be ready sometime in 2019. Scott Belsky, chief product officer of Adobe’s Creative Cloud, told Bloomberg: My aspiration is to get these on the…

There’s only 1 Blockbuster store left

Jul13
by Sindy Cator on July 13, 2018 at 5:06 pm

It’s the end of an era as two more Blockbuster locations are set to close, leaving only one lonely location in the US. With no potential mates, the species is doomed to extinction. At the peak of Blockbuster’s popularity there were more than 9,000 locations dotting the US. Now there’s just one. Conservation efforts by John Oliver, host of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight,” have apparently failed. Blockbuster filed for bankruptcy back in 2011 and closed its last corporate store in 2014, signalling it was closing down all operations. There’s even a parody account on Twitter claiming to be “The Last…

The Surface Phone isn’t being killed, just ‘significantly reworked’

Jul13
by Sindy Cator on July 13, 2018 at 4:08 pm

It’s been a whirlwind month for rumors on Project Andromeda, better known as the quasi-mythical Surface Phone. First the Verge reported it was coming soon. Then Mary Jo Foley from ZDNet said to not expect it this year – or maybe ever, leading to a petition to save Andromeda that has thus far garnered over 15,000 signatures. Now Brad Sams at Thurrott says there’s more to the story. Specifically: As of last year, Microsoft planned to ship Andromeda in late 2018 but as recently as a couple weeks ago, the company put the plans on ice. Mary Jo wrote last week that…
