Report: Facebook ad clicks tumble, but the internet keeps on growing

The new 2018 Q3 Global Digital Statshot report from Hootsuite and We Are Social shows that there was plenty of change in the world of digital, social, and mobile over the past three months. There are many encouraging trends within this new data, but there are also some more worrying findings that marketers will need to monitor closely over the coming months. In particular, the latest data from Facebook suggests that clicks on ads on its platform have dropped dramatically in the past three months, with the typical global user now clicking on 20 percent fewer ads than they did…

Hackers hijack an official Fox Twitter account to spread cryptocurrency scams

Jul24

Cryptocurrency scammers are getting smarter by the day. It appears hackers have surreptitiously seized control of the official Twitter account of FOX’s show Almost Human to spread malicious “giveaway” links. The compromised account is currently impersonating Justin Sun, founder and CEO of Chinese blockchain startup TRON. It remains unclear how the hackers took over the account, but it seems the verified Almost Human profile has been tweeting about TRON since at least July 21. It seems that nobody from Fox (or the now-discontinued Almost Human production) has noticed the hack so far though. Fortunately, a quick lookup reveals that none of the…

Xiaomi’s new Mi A2 phones offer Android One in Europe on the cheap

After getting started in Europe late last year with an entry into Spain, Chinese gadget maker Xiaomi is hoping to woo folks looking for a low-end Android phone with its new A2 and A2 Lite handsets. These are the follow-ups to Xiaomi’s Mi A1, which launched almost a year ago as the company’s first Android One device in partnership with Google. The A2 and A2 Lite are part of the same program, and as such, come with the latest version of the platform sans Xiaomi’s MIUI skin, so as to receive software updates as soon as Google can ship them,…

Etherscan rushes to plug vulnerabilities following strange hacking attempts overnight

Jul24

Etherscan, the most widely used Ethereum blockchain explorer, has quickly patched security vulnerabilities overnight as hackers exploited certain parts of its service. Hackers successfully manipulated the Disqus API – a third-party service used by Etherscan that allows for comments to be left on Ethereum wallet addresses. They were able to execute a Cross Site Scripting (XSS) attack to inject JavaScript code into its interface that forced a spooky message to pop-up for its users. It simply read: ‘1337’ – which is ‘leetspeak’ for ‘elite,’ a pseudo-language popular at the dawn of the internet which replaced English letters with ASCII symbols. Twitter users…

YouTube tests Explore feature for more personalized video recommendations

If trying to tear yourself away from watching too many videos on YouTube isn’t hard enough, it could get even harder. According to a post released by YouTube, the experimental feature will be tested out on one percent of iOS YouTube app users over the next few weeks. YouTube claims this feature will showcase content to users that they might not otherwise see on the platform. Similarly to Instagram’s Explore tab, the feature will help users discover more videos and creators that usually get buried under the thousands of other daily content uploads. In addition to users discovering more videos, this feature…
