Facebook mistakenly celebrated a devastating earthquake

Facebook was recently forced to apologize — yeah, I know, again — for inadvertently celebrating the deadly Indonesian earthquake on Sunday. It’s not the first time the company has shown how tasteless it can be in the face of a natural disaster. The 7.0 magnitude earthquake, the latest one to hit a country that has been in a state of emergency since last month, allegedly killed over 300 people. Aid workers are still struggling to reach some areas devastated by the quake, and, according to CNN, at least 20,000 people are still in need of assistance. Naturally, sympathetic Indonesians took to…

Uber’s ‘Real-time ID Check’ doesn’t deal well with transgender drivers

A transgender woman working as an Uber driver during her transition recently found herself locked out of her account. It wasn’t because of some bigot’s objections, and she’d done nothing to violate the company’s policies. It was because AI sucks at facial recognition – unless of course you’re white and cis-gendered. In this latest facial recognition SNAFU, originally reported by CNBC, Uber’s software (which runs on Microsoft’s Cognitive Services) flagged driver Janey Webb during a routine check. The company randomly requires drivers to take selfies periodically in order to prove they’re who they claim to be when they log in.…

Facial recognition is Tokyo’s secret weapon to beat the heat at the 2020 Olympics

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics plans to introduce facial recognition software at security checkpoints — both to cut down on unauthorized people getting in and, probably more importantly, getting athletes out of the scorching heat as fast as possible. Japanese company NEC Corp, the ones providing the tech, will use its software on athletes, staff, and media representative, with everyone’s pictures being taken ahead of time and stored in a database to be used at check points. Unlike previous Olympics, the Tokyo show won’t necessarily be concentrated in one central area, meaning there will likely be far more checkpoints for athletes and personnel to…

The more ninjas you massacre, the smarter this AI gets

Watching an AI train, for those of us who aren’t developers, is about as exciting as watching paint dry or grass grow. But, every once in a while someone throws some ninjas into the mix and makes it fun. An AI programmer who goes by the GitHub handle Ash47 recently published a series of projects designed to demonstrate how machines learn. He creates psuedo-gaming environments where AI has to accomplish a simple goal: stay alive. The most interesting thing about the AI in his projects isn’t what they can do, it’s how they learn to do it. One project, Ninja…
