Snapchat’s leaked source code is clean, literally

In May, hackers leaked a portion of Snapchat’s top secret source code to the wider Internet. Snapchat owner Snap Inc was quick to issue a takedown notice, but the Internet never forgets. You can still find it, if you know where to look. I got my hands on a copy last night. What impressed me is the cleanliness of the code. No, I’m not talking about the structure of the methods and sensible variable names. I mean that it’s literally clean, like a Mr. Rogers after-school special, with precisely zero profanity to be found anywhere. And believe me, I looked.…

When I first heard about Magic Leap – this was eons ago in tech terms, I frankly stopped counting the years – it seemed like an exciting proposition. The concept videos were certainly cool. As they should be, having been made by New Zealand-based special effects company WETA (you know, the one from all the Lord of the Rings films). But things have since soured considerably. There’s only so much “we know something you don’t know” you can take before it stars becoming annoying, but Magic Leap simply would not take a hint. And although Wired reports that Magic Leap’s…

Opera plans to add a cryptocurrency wallet to its desktop browser

Aug08
by Sindy Cator on August 8, 2018 at 1:38 pm

Handling cryptocurrencies is about to get easier, as Opera becomes the first major desktop browser to include a cryptocurrency wallet, negating the need for third-party extensions or applications. In doing so, Opera has adopted an interesting approach to security. The desktop wallet (which supports Ethereum, its tokens, and collectibles) synchronizes with the cryptocurrency wallet integrated in the Android version of Opera since June of this year. When a user wishes to send a payment, they sign transactions using their phone’s built-in fingerprint reader, rather than typing out a long passphrase. Passphrases can be forgotten. They can be stolen. The biometric…

IOTA responds to leaked chats revealing a heated internal strife

Aug08

Sergey Ivancheglo, co-founder of IOTA, has stated a vote of no confidence in his compatriot co-founder Dominik Schiener, as outlined in a leaked chat-log transcript on Pastebin. The transcript opens with a note from Ivangheglo stating, “I inform everyone that I [no] longer trust Dominik Schiener and I think he should quit the IOTA Foundation for the better future of IOTA.” Current details of why Ivancheglo (better known as Come-from-Beyond) is expressing this concern of Schiener remain unclear and are not explored in the chat-log transcript. However, the log goes into great detail discussing the process for Schiener’s removal and…
