LG will announce its 5-camera V40 on October 3

LG sent out invites to its next launch event on October 3, and it makes no secret of what’s to come: The V40 ThinQ is on the way. There’s little in the way of details, but the invite cryptically says ‘Take 5,” which suggests that the V40 will indeed come with five cameras as previously rumored. To be clear, that’s three on the rear and two on the front. While it may seem like LG is just following a trend of adding more cameras, its worth noting the company was actually one of the first to adopt a multi-camera setup…

Google Cloud’s new AI head comes with his own ties to the Pentagon’s Project Maven

Google Cloud’s soon-to-be head of AI will have his work cut out for him if he wants to convince disgruntled employees he won’t follow in his predecessors footsteps and develop AI for the military. He’s the co-chair of a defense and security think-tank along with one of the people responsible for the creation of Project Maven. Google Cloud announced earlier this week that Carnegie Mellon’s Andrew Moore will replace AI head Fei-Fei Li by the end of the year. Moore is returning to Google, having previously been a director with the company from 2007 through 2014. In May he was…

Mark Zuckerberg admits Facebook needs help protecting the elections

We’re now less than two months out from the US midterm elections, and the pre-emptive assurances about security from social media sites, particularly Facebook, are now colored by a sense of urgency. Today, CEO Mark Zuckerberg released a massive blog post detailing the steps the company has already taken to prevent further election interference, and spiced it up by calling on everyone who isn’t Facebook to step up as well. He’s probably justified in his need to comment. Just last week, Facebook‘s COO Sheryl Sandberg was testifying about election interference before Congress, meaning elected officials consider it a serious issue. Last year,…

OnePlus has officially given up on the headphone jack

Team Android just lost one of the few remaining defenders of the headphone jack. Today, OnePlus founder Carl Pei went on the record to say the company’s next device – presumably the 6T – will not have a headphone jack. In an interview with TechRadar, Pei said: “It was a very controversial decision. We’re not doing it for the sake of doing it and because everyone else is. We believe now is the right time, as it’ll benefit the majority of our users while keeping the downside low.” Specifically, those benefits include freeing up space for “improved battery life” and…

IBM joins efforts to create the blockchain equivalent of the ‘Yellow Pages’

Remember those massive yellow books that everyone used to collect by the front door? If you thought they were gone and buried, think again. Someone is making the blockchain equivalent and IBM just joined. IBM has just announced that it has joined a project which aims to deliver a cataloge-like platform of blockchains and blockchain-based businesses. The project, known as the ’Unbounded Registry,” will be led by blockchain development firm HACERA. The news coincides with the registry’s official launch, making IBM a founding member. According to its mission statement, HACERA seeks to create a “decentrlaized cross-blockchain registry that brings permissioned…
