Report: 2018 is the year of stablecoin (whether you like it or not)

In 1997, during the dot-com boom, there were nearly 9,000 companies listed on U.S. stock exchanges. Since then, that figure has been cut in half and the number of IPOs has been in decline. Fast forward to 2017 and startups raised over $6.6 billion through ICOs. That figure doesn’t include EOS, which had a year-long ICO that was completed in 2018 and raised over $4 billion, and there’s still the question of how to count Telegram’s $1.7 billion private token sale. Are ICOs replacing IPOs? Not so fast. As opposed to ICOs becoming the new normal, data suggests we might…

Shortly after the synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh, I noticed that the word “Jews” was trending on Twitter. As a social media researcher and educator, I became concerned that the violence would spread online, as it has in the past. The alleged synagogue shooter’s activity on the Gab social media site has drawn attention to that site’s role as a hate-filled alternative to more mainstream options like Facebook and Twitter. Nov22

The board organizing the conference on Neural Information Processing Systems – one of the world’s most noted events for researchers working on artificial intelligence – has changed the acronym used for the event’s name after attendees complained that the name contributed to an atmosphere of sexism. The event attended by machine learning researchers and statisticians has been a major recruiting ground for companies and labs working on AI. For the past 30 years, the conference has been called NIPS – which is both a slur against Japanese people, and a sexualized term for women’s nipples. Following the complaints, it has been…
