It’s time to kill off follower counts on social networks

Over the past couple of weeks, Twitter and Instagram have begun testing ways to reduce visual emphasis on users’ follower counts. The tweaks aren’t much more than changes in font size and where the text appears. But they represent a shift focus away from personalities’ popularity to the content they create, and the value they bring to the community. I’m totally in favor of this, and I hope these companies expand their experiments to see how they play out. And I’m not the only one. Reddit doesn’t display follower counts (though it does show your ‘karma,’ or points earned for…

Vulnerability in Ethereum token allowed hackers to suck exchanges dry

A critical vulnerability in an Ethereum token made it possible for malicious actors to force cryptocurrency exchange desks to spend extremely high fees on transactions. Even worse, the attackers could abuse the bug for profit. The flaw, discovered by a group of cryptocurrency researchers, resides in Ethereum-based cryptocurrency GasToken. It remains unclear precisely how many exchanges are potentially vulnerable to it, but the researchers have contacted a bulk of possibly affected platforms. The bug primarily concerns exchange services with no gas usage limit for withdrawals to random addresses. Once such a transaction has been initiated, the attackers could make exchanges…

Some human experiences are universal; they exist wherever our species may be. For example, games have been played worldwide for millennia, most religions were developed to make sense of our existence, and – potentially most widespread – people finds ways to pretend they’re working when they’re not.
