Over 65 percent of new developers are self-taught. I’m surprised it’s not 100 percent

HackerRank today published the 2018 edition of its Student Developer Report. The survey, which looks at educational and language trends across over 10,000 students, has some interesting findings, the most fascinating of which is that over 65 percent of students are self-taught. 27.39 percent said they learned to code via self-directed learning. A further 37.70 percent said they learned via a combination of school and individual study. Only 31.90 percent said they only learned to code at school. It’s not even moderately surprising that self-teaching is so common among programmers. College degrees – although useful in many respects, such as…

Monopoly guy watches disapprovingly as Congress yells at Google’s CEO

Google‘s CEO, Sundar Pichai, is in Washington today. He’s trying to explain how the world’s most advanced technology company works to Congress. At some point we’re sure he’s going to be arrested for witchcraft. Pichai’s not the only fat cat with deep pockets in the room – sure, a lot of those politicians have that “I roll with Ajit” cash, but the CEO of Google has Microsoft money – he has an admirer in the room whose name is synonymous with wealth: Rich Uncle Pennybags (he’s the Monopoly guy). Before we get into this performance art cum accusation of monopolizing the…

DigitalOcean today announced the official release of its managed Kubernetes hosting, which it launched in a private beta earlier this year in May. The company, which is best known for its ultra-cheap VPS hosting, says that DigitalOcean Kubernetes is production ready for companies to deploy their critical applications on. “Kubernetes promises to be one of the leading technologies in a developer’s arsenal to gain the scalability, portability and availability needed to build modern apps. Unfortunately, for many it’s extremely complex to manage and deploy,” said DigitalOcean VP of Product Shiven Ramji in a statement. “With DigitalOcean Kubernetes, we make running…
