A squad of cybersecurity firms have tracked a ransomware threat spreading across the internet known as Ryuk, which has collected over 705 BTC in just five months, estimated to be worth the equivalent of $3.7 million. Using email phishing campaigns to inject tens of thousands of victims with a banking Trojan called TrickBot, ransomers later hand-picking infected machines believed to be owned by large companies or government organizations on which to deploy Ryuk, ZDNet reports. Once the high-profile machines are selected, Ryuk is built to encrypt all of the targets’ hard drives, locking data until victims contact the hackers and pay a…

The Malaysian government is regulating initial coin offerings (ICOs) and cryptocurrency trading. According to a statement issued by Lim Guan Eng, the country’s Minister of Finance, launching unauthorized ICOs or participating in the exchange of digital goods could result in a 10-year jail term and a $2,4 million (RM 10 million fine). The order, which will acknowledge digital currencies and tokens as securities, will be enforced on January 15 by the Securities Commission Malaysia. In his statement, the Finance Minister said: “The Ministry of Finance (MOF) views digital assets, as well as its underlying blockchain technologies, as having the potential…

Review: The Honor 10 Lite is a budget phone that feels much more expensive

Jan14

Slap bang in the middle of 2018, Honor released the venerable Honor 10 smartphone, which we were pretty big fans of. Why? For the simple reason that his drop-dead gorgeous handset offered impressive camera performance and near-flagship specifications for the palatable price of £399 (or €449 in the Eurozone). Now, Honor’s followed up with the Honor 10 Lite. As the name implies, this is a cheaper version, with suitably scaled-down specifications. But before you write it off as an uninspiring entry-level phone, keep reading. It’s actually really good — especially for its bargain-basement price. For the past month, I’ve been…

It’s another Monday and that means we have another Moonday Mornings for you. Here’s what you need to catch up on from over the weekend. 1. Nine cryptocurrency mining firms have decided to band together and sue a Washington State utility company after it raised electricity costs. The lawsuit claims the energy supplier operated inappropriately when it created a new rate to raise electricity costs, Bitcoin.com reports. The energy provider, Grant PUD, said the new rate is designed to reduce risk and provide competitive rates to its retail customers. 2. Despite coming up against numerous challenges the Marshall Islands is…
