YouTube Music launches in India to battle it out with Spotify et al

At long last, YouTube Music has launched in India with a free ad-supported option, as well as its Premium plan at Rs. 99 ($1.42) per month. That’ll see it compete with the likes of international heavyweights Spotify (which went live there last month) and Apple Music, as well as local incumbents like JioSaavn, Gaana, and Wynk. YouTube Music Premium offers a three-month free trial, after which your subscription fee will kick in. The company’s also launching YouTube Premium for Rs. 129 ($1.85) per month: it unlocks access to ad-free YouTube and YouTube Originals, along with YouTube Music. If you’re already subscribed…

If properly enforced, GDPR can solve social media’s biggest problems

From concerns about data sharing to the hosting of harmful content, every week seems to bring more clamour for new laws to regulate the technology giants and make the internet “safer”. But what if our existing data protection laws, at least in Europe, could achieve most of the job? Germany has already started introducing new legislation, enacting a law in 2018 that forces social media firms to remove hateful content. In the UK, the government has proposed a code of practice for social media companies to tackle “abusive content”. And health secretary Matt Hancock has now demanded laws regulating the…

SEC chairman explains how it classifies cryptocurrencies as securities

Consider it confirmed: the Howey test is definitely the US Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SECs) gold standard benchmark for deciding whether a cryptocurrency is in fact, a security. “Security” is a term used for describing certain financial assets that can be traded. It can refer to any form of financial instrument, even cryptocurrencies and associated tokens. Chairman Jay Clayton finally responded to calls to clarify how the SEC approaches classifying cryptocurrencies as securities. A set of political representatives formally submitted concerns a few months back, which were supported by digital asset think-tank Coin Center. His reply outlines the SECs stance clearly:…

AI can help fight climate change by optimizing energy efficiency

Mar12
by Sindy Cator on March 12, 2019 at 1:55 pm

Man-made climate change is an undeniable fact, and the need to mitigate its damage is all too real. We need to make drastic changes in the next 12 years to prevent climate disasters and reach our goal of restricting an increase in global temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Time is of the essence, and that’s where AI comes in. “AI can make it much cheaper and much faster to analyze consumption data to find patterns that you can use to lower and make your energy use more efficient,” Henrik Brink told TNW at North Star AI in Estonia. That’s why…

Everything we know about Apple’s unexpected March 25 event

Mar12
by Sindy Cator on March 12, 2019 at 1:31 pm
Posted In: Apps, Around the Web

For months, Apple has been rumored to be working on a streaming video service, and it looks like the company will finally unveil its next offering on March 25. It’s sent out invites for an event at its new campus, with the tagline ‘It’s show time.’ Apple hasn’t confirmed that this is what it’ll be about, but that’s the word on the street. We heard last year that the company had plans to spend a billion dollars to produce original video content through 2018, with big names like Oprah, Aaron Paul, Steve Carrell, and Kristen Wiig. It also has deals in…
