CHEAP: Quick, this Bose Bluetooth speaker is cheaper than it’s ever been

Welcome to CHEAP, our brand-new series about things that are good, but most of all, cheap. CHEAP! Right, we’ve got a great deal for you today: a full $40 (20 percent) off the Bose SoundLink Revolve Bluetooth speaker. This means it’s only $159.99. What are you waiting for? Go, go, go! It’s my belief that everyone needs a portable Bluetooth speaker. Seriously. I use mine every single day, and I shudder to think of the times I didn’t have a little music cylinder following me everywhere. To put this bluntly, the Bose SoundLink Revolve is one of the best examples of this tech around.…

Apple finally updates the iPad Mini and iPad Air after 3.5 years

With little fanfare, Apple today announced major (and, dare I say, long overdue) updates to the iPad Mini and the iPad Air. The iPad Air is perhaps the most surprising of the lot. However, the revived iPad Air is an entirely different beast, sitting halfway between the old one and the more aspirational iPad Pro models. In addition to Apple Pencil support, it packs a larger 10.5-inch display. This is a slight increase on the 9.7-inch display found on the iPad Air 2. Apple says this has…

Why you should care about public computers disappearing from libraries

Mar18
by Sindy Cator on March 18, 2019 at 12:17 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, UK

While I was growing up, a weekend wasn’t complete without a trip to the library. With my allowance jingling in my pocket, I could rent a VHS or CD for just a few coins. And, of course, books were free (provided you returned them on time, which I seldom did). But now, in a world with Netflix and Amazon Kindle, libraries have lost their shine. For me, it’s nostalgia, but for millions of low-income people, they serve as an essential connection to the digital world. Public libraries allow them to access worlds of knowledge, and crucially, government services that have…

How Facebook plans to use machine learning to wipe out revenge porn

Mar18
by Sindy Cator on March 18, 2019 at 12:12 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, artificial intelligence, Insider

Facebook’s used its machine learning prowess to filter hate speech and fake accounts— but now it’s turning its focus on fighting revenge porn. In an announcement last week, the company said that it’s introducing new technology to remove non-consensual intimate photos and videos off its platform. The social network claims that the new AI will help the company weed out nude and near-nude photos and videos before anyone reports them. Once the AI detects such content, a Facebook staffer will review it to see if it violates the site’s community guidelines. If they find that the content infringes the social network’s terms,…
