Quotable

"House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., announced his temporary resignation as committee chairman, March 3, 2010, on Capitol Hill, due to charges that he violated ethics and was corrupt. It probably did not help that he was made chairman of the committee for his promise to end the "culture of corruption" in Washington, DC." ~ Yasha Harari

NASA is paying SpaceX $69M to crash a rocket into an asteroid

NASA today awarded SpaceX a $69 million contract to redirect an asteroid off its intended path. The mission, called the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), uses a technique known as a kinetic impactor. It involves sending one or more high-speed spacecraft into the path of an approaching near-earth object — in this case, an asteroid. If successful, the rocket would steer the asteroid away from the Earth’s orbital path, avoiding the need for an Armageddon sequel, presumably. NASA demonstrated this on a smaller scale with the Deep Impact mission in 2005 — the name of yet another asteroid movie that we…

AI rejects conservative human views on furniture, designs wacky chair

If you’re lucky enough to be in Italy for Milan Design Week this year, do yourself a favor and check out the world’s first “chair designed using artificial intelligence to be put into production.” With language that specific you know it must be interesting. Kartell, Philippe Starck, and Autodesk, a 3-D software company, collaborated on the design, but ultimately the AI presented the final specifications. According to a report from Dezeen, the goal of the AI project was to create a chair as the result of communication between a machine learning system and human designers. In a video discussing the project,…

Voice actor lets it slip that Horizon Zero Dawn sequel is in the works

For those of you who loved 2017’s awesome post-apocalyptic role-playing robot-riding extravaganza Horizon Zero Dawn, actress Janina Gavankar just confirmed that a sequel is in the works. We don’t know any more as yet, but I know I want it now. I want it yesterday. Gavankar — best known as Iden Versio from Star Wars: Battlefront 2‘s story mode — played DLC character Tatai in Horizon Zero Dawn. She has expressed great appreciation for developer Guerrilla Games and was also apparently a fan of the game even before appearing in it. So it’s probably not a surprise that, when an appreciative fan approached…

Highly Recommended: Rockstar Games’ immersive worlds are a stoner’s delight

Highly Recommended is our new series talking about the experience of safely engaging with tech-based entertainment and gadgets while “high.” We hope our frank, open approach to this subject matter will aid in the fight to normalize the legal use of cannabis for recreational and medicinal purposes. Rockstar Games is one of the most recognizable names in the gaming industry. Its franchises — including Red Dead Redemption and Grand Theft Auto — are basically licenses to print money for the company. For some reason, people can’t get enough of them — that reason is, often, probably cannabis. It’s a safe…
