Earthworm Jim 3 releases exclusively on retro console Intellivision Amico

There’s a new Earthworm Jim game on the horizon — but you have to be willing to buy a whole new console to play it. The console in question is the upcoming Intellivision Amico, a retro plug-n-play that’s suddenly looking like a much hotter commodity now that it has a new game to show for itself. It’s a crossover I’d not yet thought of, but but one that makes sense in retrospect: franchise-resurrecting sequels and remasters with retro consoles. It’s a pleasing combination of old and new that does more than just repackage old favorites on a cumbersome box that takes up one…

CHEAP: Get the Samsung Galaxy S9 for the price of a current-generation mid-ranger

Samsung released its Galaxy S9 flagship over a year ago. One year is a long time in the phone world, where change happens at a break-neck pace. Staying power – genuine, long-term value that doesn’t diminish after ten minutes – often feels elusive. And yet, the Samsung Galaxy S9 remains a cracking phone. One which, given the right price, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend. Funny I should mention price, because at the moment, retailers everywhere are discounting the Samsung Galaxy S9. A great example of this is Amazon, which has the 64GB Midnight Black model for $474. That’s $125 off…

Revenge of the nerds: Facebook is developing human-level AI to fight bullying

Facebook might be taking its bullying problem a lot more seriously than you think. Rather than hire more humans to flag troubling content, it plans on developing AI with human level intelligence to do the job. An official company blog post today, on the subject of content moderation, laid out a road map for machine learning solutions to bullying on Facebook: One potential answer is an approach that Facebook Chief AI Scientist, Yann LeCun, has been discussing for years: self-supervision. Instead of relying solely on data that’s been labeled for training purposes by humans — or even on weakly supervised…

Cryptocurrency Q1 roundup: How did Ethereum perform?

May01

Ethereum’s creators wanted to create a platform that would allow users all over the world to write decentralized applications, and use the Ethereum blockchain as what it calls a “world computer.” Ethereum made smart contracts a common part of the blockchain conversation. Smart contracts are programming tools that let developers write self-executing scripts that run on the Ethereum blockchain. When these scripts are executed, the computing nodes are compensated for their work in Ethereum’s native token, Ether. One, perhaps unforeseen, consequence was that Ethereum’s smart contracts enabled the initial coin offering (ICO). Unfortunately, many ICOs revealed themselves to be little…
