Bitcoin valuation takes another hit as Mt. Gox CEO steps down from the Bitcoin Foundation

bitcoin 520x245 Bitcoin valuation takes another hit as Mt. Gox CEO steps down from the Bitcoin Foundation

Bitcoin is going through another significant dip after the CEO of Mt. Gox, a controversial Bitcoin currency exchange service, stepped down from the Bitcoin Foundation, the committee that oversees management of the virtual currency.

A blog post from the foundation – noted by Coinbase — reveals that Mark Karpeles has resigned from his board seat, but doesn’t give a reason for his departure. The exit is likely due to ongoing technical issues that have hit Mt. Gox particular hard over the past month — during which time it completely froze withdrawals, sending prices on the exchange crashing as customers worried about the future of Bitcoins stored in Mt. Gox.

Regardless of the specifics of his exit, Karpeles’ resignation appears to have increased concern among Mt. Gox users. Prices on the exchange — which are lower than others due to a range of user concerns — had actually jumped this weekend, but dropped again during morning time in Asia following the news.

That slump has affected other exchanges, and pushed the price of Bitcoin down to $574.

Opera’s new Android app helps you get more out of your mobile Internet plan

If you’ve ever been frustrated by exceeding your data plan on a monthly basis, browser-maker Opera may just have a solution for you.

The Norwegian company, which is strongest in emerging markets due to its focus on compressing browser data with Opera Mini, has branched out into compressing data across apps,  as it officially launched a free data-savings app for Android smartphone users today. This shift is key because people typically consume data by accessing apps nowadays, not by surfing within browsers.

The app, Opera Max, extends the life of your data plan by up to 50 percent, the company says. This means that if you pay $40 a month for a 1GB data plan, using Opera Max lets you consume up to 1.5GB per month for the same cost. Opera notes that “if you have a pre-paid data plan, pay per megabyte of use, or are roaming internationally, this app adds even more value.”

In particular, Opera Max compresses videos across your Android device, which the company claims has never been done before. As videos tend to use a lot of data, compressing them means you get more out of apps including YouTube, Instagram and Vine.

In the Opera Max app, you get to see a timeline of your apps usage and how much you saved on data by month or by day — listed individually, as well as in total.

How Opera Max works: Once the app has been downloaded, it immediately starts compressing and rerouting data via a VPN to the data-savings cloud. All non-encrypted data requests are then sent through Opera’s compression servers, which optimize video, images and websites to use less data.

“As ‘kings of compression,’ we think Opera Max is the next step in the evolution of this technology, which will intelligently compress data across apps, not just your browser,” Sergey Lossev, the head of product at Opera Max, says.

From today, the Opera Max beta will be available to Android users in the US and Europe who already pre-registered for it. The app will be launched gradually in other regions worldwide.

Lenovo debuts its DOit suite of apps to help protect, share, and manage your digital information

469093327 520x245 Lenovo debuts its DOit suite of apps to help protect, share, and manage your digital information

Lenovo has unveiled a new suite of applications that it believes will help consumers streamline their digital lives.

As part of its DOit app series, these five apps are intended to facilitate easy sharing, syncing, protecting, and managing of information across mobile phones and tablet devices. Fitting in with the company’s marketing campaign of building devices for “those who do”, these DOit apps will be preloaded on various devices starting this month.

Liu Jun, Lenovo’s executive vice president for its Mobile Business Group, said in a statement:

We’ve created a premium mobile experience by marrying our elegant and powerful smartphones and tablets with an unparalleled software app experience that makes our devices incredibly simple to use and compatible with virtually any other device a user wants to share and sync with.

Making its debut at the 2014 Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, Spain, Lenovo’s DOit apps are made up of five key apps that are designed to address key concerns of the company’s users. These apps run the range of being able to capture information, share it, and store it for safekeeping. Here’s the five apps in Lenovo’s suite:

SHAREit
Lenovo’s inter-network file sharing service, the SHAREit app allows users to transfer photos, videos, music files, documents, contacts, and apps between various devices without incurring any network charges. The process happens wirelessly and doesn’t need Bluetooth, a phone network, or a WiFi connection. This app will work on not only Lenovo devices, but also iOS and Windows PC hardware.

With SHAREit, files can be shared with up to five friends simultaneously. The company says that enabled devices can automatically find each other with in close proximity and users can also share the app wirelessly to start rapid sharing immediately — shades of Bump?

SECUREit
As more mobile devices are being used, having increased security is important, especially as hackers and criminals seek to install malicious code onto smartphones and tablets to steal information. With SECUREit, users will have data-protection software installed to help protect against viruses, spam, and malware.

What’s more, in the event that your device is stolen, it includes features that are similar to Apple’s Find my iPhone or Samsung’s KNOX system. Users can enable anti-theft protection in the event someone tries to change the SIM card, rendering the device useless without a password.

Privacy features are also included, meaning that SECUREit will block spam text messages and calls, track data usage, and has the ability to encrypt your private calls and contacts.

But it also offers the capability of speeding up devices by monitoring the phone or tablet to ensure redundant background apps aren’t running and ensuring that the cache remains clean and that enough memory is available to help execute important tasks.

SYNCit
SYNCit offers users a quick way of backing up their contact information, SMS messages, and call logs. It very much resembles what many other OEMs offer, such as Apple’s iCloud. Seeing a gap in the Android ecosystem, SYNCit works beyond Lenovo devices and can be installed on Android smartphones and tablets.

SNAPit Camera
Perhaps the most intriguing is Lenovo’s SNAPit Camera app that offers user-centric hardware and software to help bolster the photo experience on the company’s devices. The unveiling of this is interesting in that it comes a month after Lenovo bought Motorola from Google for $2.91 billion. This app is billed as being created with smartphones in mind and allows users to shoot panoramic, low-light photos, and more. SNAPit also has in-app photo editing capabilities and you can create animated GIFs too.

SEEit Gallery
This is a complementary app joining SNAPit Camera. It uses facial recognition in order to automatically categorize all photos into folders. Within the app, users can apply filters and effects to improve their imagery.

All of the above listed applications are free to install, but its availability depends on the device you have. SHAREit will be on all new Lenovo Android tablets and smartphones and can be downloaded today from the Google Play store. An iOS and Windows PC version will be available later this month.

SYNCit and SECUREit will also be preloaded on all new Lenovo Android smartphones and selected tablets. The app can also be downloaded from the Google Play store to work on non-Lenovo devices. Lastly, both SNAPit Camera and SEEit Gallery will only be available on select Lenovo tablets and smartphones.

Mozilla is bringing Firefox OS to new markets, as Alcatel unveils first tablet and new smartphones

Screen Shot 2013 05 17 at 3.08.04 PM 520x245 Mozilla is bringing Firefox OS to new markets, as Alcatel unveils first tablet and new smartphones

Mozilla has announced that the number of countries where its Firefox OS devices are available to buy is set to increase in the near future thanks to pledges from Telefonica and Deutsche Telekom to make them more widely available.

Revealed at MWC 2014 in Barcelona, devices running the open source OS are set to make their way to Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Germany, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Panama.

Outside of Latin America, Deutsche Telekom said it would expand its Firefox OS offerings too, to make them available in Croatia, the Czech Republic, Macedonia and Montenegro.

In addition to Firefox OS devices making their way to new markets, there will also be a few new ones to choose from thanks to Alcatel, which announced its first tablet – the Fire 7 – as well as the Fire E, Fire C and Fire S smartphones today too.

Fire C, E, S

The Fire C will be the lowest end of the range and comes with a 3.5-inch (320 x 480 pixels) HVGA TFT display and a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, although given the rest of the spec list, we’d be surprised if it was from a well-known brand like Qualcomm.

The Fire E bumps up the specs a little, which has a 4.5-inch 540 x 960 pixel qHD screen, 1.2GHz dual-core processor and 512MB RAM. On board storage is limited to just 4GB, although this can be expanded through use of a microSD card.

The Fire S, which sports specs that equate to around the mid-range of the wider smartphone world, offers 4G LTE, a 4.5-inch qHD display and has a 1.2GHz quad-core processor. There’s also an 8-megapixel snapper on the rear and a 2-megapixel offering on the front.

Fire 7

The Fire 7 is specifically being touted as a ‘concept’ device, which means it could be a way off making it to market, if it ever manages it. Nonetheless, if it does arrive, it’ll be sporting a similar spec list to the Fire S smartphone.
