If video is hard news then slow motion video (slo-mo) is the op-ed page. Slo-mo is a special effects technique in which the action appears to be happening slower than its normal speed. Often used to lend versatility to a project, slo-mo can make the output more cinematic and artistic, add emphasis, ramp up anticipation, and focus viewers on the essence of a narrative. Slo-mo is a powerful tool, so use it to its best advantage—whether your video is a dramatic feature or product demo. The best way to get the most out of slow motion is to plan ahead—analyze how…

The Google Search for Android app received multiple updates this week, but the changelog showed nothing; now the company has revealed this release is all about cricket. You can download the new version now from Google Play. Just in time for ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh, Google Now can now give you live updates on your favorite national teams’ runs and wickets. It also supports checking upcoming fixtures, though you’ll first have to add your team to your settings: tap on the magic wand icon in the app. Image Credit: Thinkstock

Geopieces: A local discovery service that lets you ‘own’ a piece of the world

Geopieces
Local discovery mapping apps like Caterina Fake’s Findery – which recently launched for iOS – are not a new idea. In fact, the Web version of Findery was kicking around for more than a year before a native mobile app was launched. Nonetheless, undeterred by already established competitors like this is Geopieces – a new player on the block that has been operating in stealth mode. Available to download for Android devices or to use via the Web platform, Geopieces is one part Findery, one part The Million Dollar Homepage. There’s also a Foursquare-like element too. Kind of. In essence, it allows…

sxswcookbook
We don’t usually cover cookbooks here at TNW, but the official SXSW 2014 Interactive cookbook has a unique tech angle that makes it worth a mention. Compiled by the festival organizers and Cookbook Create, a new startup for making your own cookbook, the book features a diverse mix of recipes from popular tech leaders like 500 Startups’ Dave McClure, Foursquare founder Dennis Crowley, and Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh. The recipes in the book are sorted by several buzzword-y categories of people: amplifiers, builders, storytellers, illuminators, and decoders. Each contributor has a mini-bio alongside his or her recipe. Dishes range from a…

Microsoft Indroduces Chinese Version of XP
With the Windows XP end of support date now less than a month away, Microsoft is trying to woo users off the ancient 12-year-old operating system. The latest comes in the form of a Microsoft Store deal that offers a $50 gift card, 90-days of free support, and free data transfer with the purchase of a new PC. As always with such offers, however, there are some details worth noting. The $50 digital gift card can only be used towards future purchases at the online Microsoft Store in the US. Free support is hardly anything new for Microsoft Store purchases,…
