David Noy is CMO of Ginger Software, a language learning and productivity boosting software for ESL and native English speakers. One of the biggest challenges for software developers lies in the realm of updates. From small tech startups to giants of industry, the problem of fixing bugs, updating code and design, and diversifying software functionality requires the deployment of frequent updates to the user. Wherein lies the challenge? There are many different industries and software types, and each requires developers to observe a balance between too many updates and not enough. To best serve your user base, let’s look at a…

Chargers
Running out of power is pretty much the biggest pain of modern day smartphones, and while sitting around waiting for them to charge isn’t usually the end of the world, there are still better things you could be doing. Enter StoreDot, an Israeli technology company with a special battery and charger that can supposedly cut re-juicing time down to around 30 seconds. The prototype charging unit, designed for the Samsung Galaxy S4, was demoed for the first time at Microsoft’s Think Next conference in Tel Aviv, Israel, today – but most of the innovation comes in the battery pack itself,…

The growing power of online video, captured in… an online video

It’s no secret that video is a powerful form of online content, but just how powerful? Shutterstock has collaborated with comScore to produce this video that showcases some of the key stats around the growth of online video consumption. For example, 190 million Americans (61 percent of the total population) watched an average of 397 online videos in the month of January 2014, and 36 percent of those videos (or about 143 per person) were advertisements. Staying with the US, one-in-12 videos was watched via mobile in 2012, the ratio had shifted to one-in-six just a year later.  You can watch the…

This selfie thing is getting all too common, why not take a different approach? ASCIIcam is a fun site that takes your photo using characters from the ASCII coding scheme. Here’s one (of many) images that I made earlier — can you guess what I’m doing here? Sometimes the images can very clear — like this one of TNW’s social media director Matt Navarra: We noticed a few similar sites, in case you want to shop around for…

While there’s no shortage of general productivity tools in the App Store, Day Flow has thrown its hat into the time-management ring with a nice little iPhone app to help track what you do with your days. Here’s how it works. Things kick off with a single figure on the homescreen – the number of hours remaining in your day. You then select a category to allocate your current activity to, though it’s worth noting here that you’ll probably want to edit these.     Indeed, within Settings, you can change all the tags to suit what you do, and also…
