Yahoo has big plans for online video content — and it is eyeing original TV series the likes of those that Netflix and Amazon are targeting, the Wall Street Journal reports. Yahoo is said to be interested in series that consist of 10 half-hour-long comedies, with the Journal citing sources as saying they will have per-episode budgets from $700,000 to a few million dollars. The projects are said to be led by writers and directors with TV experience. Essentially, the WSJ notes that Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer is seeking to produce “a hit online show with viral appeal.” The company is close…

How to manage talented people by not bossing them around

man alone in office
Walter Chen is the founder and CEO of iDoneThis, the easiest way to share and celebrate what you get done at work, every day. On his downtime, he blogs about management, entrepreneurship, and happiness on the iDoneThis blog. Getting rid of managers may seem like just another tech trend, but much of the skepticism around going “bossless” or flat is due to misleading terminology. We don’t quite have a good vocabulary for it yet — no managers doesn’t mean no management, and flat structure doesn’t mean everyone has equal sway. Power, leadership, and even hierarchy still exist in these alternative structures, but instead of…

FRANCE-INTERNET-WAZE
Google completed its acquisition of Waze last June, but only now has the price tag that it paid for the Israel-headquartered social mapping startup and a hint at why the company sold out been revealed. A blog post on LinkedIn from Noam Bardin, who is CEO and co-founder of Waze, confirms that Google agreed to a $1.15 billion deal to buy the company. That’s notable since it is the first time that a member of either company has confirmed a figure — media estimates had varied from $1.1 billion to $1.3 billion — although it isn’t clear how that broke down over…

If you’re the owner of a Microsoft Surface Tablet and are often pained by poor audio on your device, there’s a new Kickstarter project that may interest you. ‘Ears for the Surface Tablets’ is a campaign seeking $5,500 in funding to produce a set of $10 clip-on, plastic ‘ears’ that it is claimed increase speaker volume on a Surface by 10 decibels — that’s around 20 percent higher than usual. The ears attach to the top corners of a Surface and increase the sound by redirecting the output of the speakers towards the person in front of the device, as the…

The ideal length for everything on the Internet

measuring tape
This post originally appeared on the Buffer blog. Every so often when I’m tweeting or emailing, I’ll think: Should I really be writing so much? I tend to get carried away. And for the times that I do, it sure would be nice to know if all this extra typing is hurting or helping my cause. I want to stand out on social media, but I want to do it in the right way. Curious, I dug around and found some answers for the ideal lengths of tweets and titles and everything in between. Many of these could have been answered with…
