The Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, as the legend goes, was invented when two oblivious young people walking around eating boring snacks accidentally crashed into each other on a city street. Grab one while you read about an even better mash-up: the one between machine learning and quantum computers that’ll eventually, accidentally lead to human-level AI. But first, behold the 1980s in all its goofy glory: Now back to our electric dreams of sentient machines that love, care, and think. The path there probably won’t be unlike the one in the video above. Sure, it’s possible some genius will have a…

Supreme Court ruling means Apple could face lawsuits from lots of angry customers

The United States Supreme Court ruled this week that users could sue Apple for allegedly monopolizing the App Store and driving up the price of apps. This means that, if you’re so inclined, you could bring suit against Apple for overcharging you. Apple v Pepper, as the case is called, dealt with the issue of whether Apple’s 30 percent revenue cut is a charge that trickles down to consumers. Given that the App Store is a monopoly — meaning there’s really no other way to legally get an app on an iPhone — the plaintiffs argued that the size of…

BitMEX: IEOs raised $39M, but project teams have kept 95% of tokens

Initial exchange offerings (IEOs) have raised $38.9 million with token sales in 2019, reports BitMEX Research, the analytics arm of cryptocurrency exchange BitMEX. While early IEO investors have had lots of opportunity to profit, returns have been typically poor once the tokens become tradable. On average, the teams behind IEO tokens were found to have made just 4.4 percent of the total supply available for purchase. The remaining 95.6 percent of the tokens will be kept to fund development of related projects by selling them through cryptocurrency exchanges like Binance and Huobi. So far, the amount raised through IEOs is comparatively…

Michael Terpin, the Bitcoin investor who had $24 million worth of cryptocurrency stolen from him in a SIM-swapping hack, has been awarded a payout three-times the size of his original loss. Los Angeles Superior Court has ordered New York-based Bitcoin Bandit Nicholas Truglia to pay Terpin $74.8 million in compensation, Reuters reports. Truglia and his gang of 25 accomplices used SIM-swapping to gain access to and control Terpin’s cryptocurrency accounts in early 2018. The gang drained his accounts of 3 million tokens of an unnamed digital asset. Terpin logged his case against Truglia in January this year, and is still…
