Pop quiz

Question One

You want to calculate a running (i.e. cumulative) total of the Data column.
Which of these formulas should you put in B2 and drag down, and why?
=SUM(A$2:A2)
=SUM(A2,B1)

Question Two

You want to calculate a running (i.e. cumulative) total of the Data column, and subtract 1 from it.
Which of these formulas should you put in B2 and drag down, and why?
=SUM(A$2:A2)-1
=SUM(A2,B1)-1

—edit—

If you’re ambivalent as to the approach you would take, download and try out a slightly revised thought experiment in the attached file. Then you won’t be ambivalent.

Pop-quiz_20140502-V6

This has a more realistic data set, where instead of subtracting 1 from the cumulative total, you want to subtract a varying list of cumulative expenses, so you can work out the cumulative net profit:
Pop Quiz v5

Take it that inserting/deleting rows is not an issue (assume the structure is locked down).

Note that this is intended to be a thought experiment/illustration about a common approach which happens to be very resource intensive, and a better solution that works just fine provided you don’t do anything else within that formula but calculate a cumulative total.

But feel free to post alternatives.

Sprint reportedly planning a takeover bid for T-Mobile this summer

A new report from Bloomberg alleges Sprint is making preparations for a takeover attempt of rival carrier T-Mobile later this year. Backed by parent company SoftBank, Sprint could reportedly make an offer as soon as June or July. However, in order to move forward with a potential merger, Sprint has a couple of obstacles to overcome. Bloomberg said the company has been exploring financing options with banks and preparing arguments to convince the FCC, which spiked an attempted merger between AT&T and T-Mobile in 2011. T-Mobile’s unconventional wireless plans have brought refreshing change to the industry, so it’s nice to see that, according…

YouTube now lets creators add a 3-second intro clip to videos on their channels

Google announced today a new feature for YouTube that will let creators upload a 3-second intro clip that will play before all of their channels’ videos. In order to take advantage of the feature, channel managers upload the intro as an unlisted video, select “Add a channel branding intro” on the InVideo Programming Page and then choose on which videos the clip should play. One caveat, however, is that Google won’t allow these intro videos to serve as ads, sponsorships or product placements. ➤ Boost your channel’s recognition using new intro videos [YouTube Creators blog] Thumbnail credit: Bulent Kilic / AFP / Getty Images

How Facebook’s Audience Network will serve relevant ads without sharing your information

Facebook announced its ad network, Audience Network at F8 2014. With it, developers and publishers can serve targeted ads in their apps based on a user’s Facebook activity. For example, if you Like Game of Thrones on Facebook, expect to be served an HBO ad for the show in a partner app. While it’s extremely targeted to an individual, Facebook is not sharing personal information with third parties. Instead, it’s using the unique identifier on a mobile device. Here’s what happens when you load an app that’s using Audience Network to serve ads. When you sign into Facebook on a mobile device, that device shares the…

Inside App Links, Facebook’s open source effort to make mobile apps more like the Web

Earlier today at F8 2014, Facebook unveiled App Links, a new open standard for deep linking across different mobile apps. The official App Links website has yet to go live, but it will eventually be located at AppLinks.org. Mobile apps are the future, but, up until now, the increasingly siloed nature of the ecosystem has been its biggest weakness. The interconnectedness of the Web – its webbiness – helps keep it open and serendipitous as we jump from page to page. The mobile platforms themselves have tried to implement deep-linking into their own products, but Facebook believes it’s in a…
