Quotable

"Widespread apathy to the Grimsvotn Volcano eruption in Iceland is reflected by the Mild interest it raised in Google Trends. This demonstrates the weakness a story on the web if it does not include babes, cyberculture, or relationships. In other words, Iceland may regret that it is not led by a nefarious womanizer like Arnold Schwarzenegger." ~ Yasha Harari

groupon-645x250
In an effort to expand beyond simple online deals and discounts, Groupon today unveiled an iPad-based checkout platform called Gnome. The tablet is disguised in a chunky plastic exterior and allows shop owners to identify voucher-toting customers from the moment they walk through the door. Using the Goupon app, users will have their details beamed to the cashier over Bluetooth – they simply have to give their name when they reach the till. Gnome is designed as an “all-in-one cash register,” so businesses will also be able to process credit and debit card payments and, in the future, integrate recognized…

Maps & Navigation
Navigation company Telenav has announced that its US-focused Scout app for iPhone is today switching to OpenStreetMap (OSM) from TomTom for all its mapping data. The company says it plans to switch to OSM for the Android incarnation in June, bringing both apps in line with Scout’s companion website, which is already using the crowdsourced mapping service. For the unitiated, OpenStreetMap is a free, editable map of the world created by the online masses (‘Wikipedia for maps’), and is designed to make it easy for developers to integrate into their own applications. It’s a little bit like Google’s own Map…

Dictionary-selfie
Yep, that’s right, Collins is calling for your votes via Twitter to see which word should make it into the twelfth edition of its dictionary, or as it called it, the Twictionary. Among the options are words like ‘adorkable’ (“dorky in an adorable way”), ‘felfie’ (a farmer selfie), ‘duckface’ (the traditional pouting often seen in selfies) and ‘fatberg‘, which is used to describe “a large mass of solid waste, grease, etc clogging a sewage system”. Eww. Also on the list are ‘fracktivist’ (someone who protests against fracking), gaybourhood (a gay-friendly neighbourhood), and ‘vaguebooking’, which means to post deliberately vague social…

calendar
Google is planning to retire the option which allows users to insert calendar invites directly within emails. Spotted by the Google Operating System fan site, and confirmed by Gmail community managers, the option will be removed in July. As of now, if you choose to insert a calendar invite within an email, you’ll get a message warning you of the changes ahead. While the move is likely to irritate a few people – the feature allowed you to send invites without having to open up Google Calendar itself – it was likely under used by the majority. On top of that, the community…
