Google has snapped up Divide, the team behind a mobile app that offers a secure means of separating personal and work-related data on company-owned devices. As Recode reports, the team was formerly called Enterproid and the terms of the deal were not disclosed. Divide confirmed the deal on its site. Although the team will be joining the folks Google – presumably to work on new projects – it said the Divide app “will work as it always has” for existing customers. Although the app isn’t being shut down for now, there’s still every possibility it’ll happen in the future. “The company was…

US-THEME-SYMBOLS
The US has filed espionage charges against hackers who allegedly spied on several US businesses, including Westinghouse and US Steel, on behalf of the Chinese military. Announced today, the charges allege that five officers in Unit 61398 of the Third Department of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) hacked into six US businesses “to steal information from those entities that would be useful to their competitors in China, including state-owned enterprises”. Two of the five individuals are being charged with supporting the alleged hacking through things like managing infrastructure. “This is a case alleging economic espionage by members of the Chinese military and represents…

Broadcast 2.0: Television is about to enjoy its biggest renaissance in 50 years

Still life of vintage television set with antenna raised.
Ernesto Schmitt is a serial entrepreneur in media and tech. He is presently co-founder & CEO of Beamly, the TV social network backed by Comcast, NBCUniversal, Viacom and BSkyB. These are uncomfortable days for network television executives. After decades of reliably scheduling when audiences are to be entertained, informed or thrilled, the linear broadcast model – and with it the existence of TV channels themselves – seems to be at the cusp of hitting obsolescence, thanks to the irrepressible march of technology.   Death by a thousand downloads Amazon and Google are just two of the global tech giants to…

I’ve seen Minecraft used for all sorts of different purposes. Recreating Westeros from Game of Thrones. Taking a tour through Apple’s Infinite Loop headquarters. Teaching Japanese? That’s a new one. James York is an English teacher at a Japanese university, as well as a PhD student researching language learning across virtual worlds. In his Minecraft class, called Kotoba Miners, students join a private server and then learn the language through custom-designed buildings. Each structure has an activity and lesson content, following the progression of the Genki Japanese textbooks. Students speak and interact with one another for most of the class…

Microsoft and Ubisoft today launched the first Assassin’s Creed game for the Web. Assassin’s Creed Pirates is a demo available worldwide for free in five languages. Based on Assassin’s Creed Pirates for Android and iOS, the Web version lets you control captain Alonzo Batilla’s ship through the Caribbean seas, evading mines and other obstacles as you search for treasure. When running on IE11, the game detects your Windows device and input type and adjusts itself accordingly to best fit your screen resolution. Nevertheless, the game is still written with interoperable code (HTML5, 3D WebGL graphics, and JavaScript) so that it…
