Netflix ditches Silverlight for HTML5 on Macs too: Available today in Safari on OS X Yosemite beta

Netflix today furthered its plans to ditch Silverlight for HTML5 on Macs, having already done so last year in IE11 on Windows 8.1. HTML5 video is now supported by Netflix in Safari on OS X Yosemite, meaning you can stream your favorite movies and TV shows without having to install any plugins. Netflix says it has been “working closely” with Apple to implement its Premium Video Extensions in Safari. These extensions allow playback of video directly in the browser without plugins such as Silverlight or Flash, but still keep publishers happy that their content won’t be ripped off. The extensions…

Google is rolling out actor and soundtrack info cards for all Play Movies users

Following a successful roll-out in the US and the UK, Google today introduced actor and soundtrack info cards for all markets where its Google Play Movies & TV app is currently available. Similar to Amazon’s X-Ray feature, viewers can quickly press the pause button and find out more information about the on-screen actors or music playing in the background. Pausing The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and tapping on Bilbo Baggins, for instance, will reveal Martin Freeman as the actor and list all of the movies and TV shows he’s starred in. With version 6.0 rolling out today, uber-popular photo- and video-sharing service Instagram is introducing a slew of new creative tools to its Android and iOS apps. Instagram says it’s striving to give its users “everything they need” from a photo-editing perspective, directly from within the app. Now when you select a filter, you’ll see a new wrench icon which you tap to reveal a tray of photo-editing tools.
