What the hell is a ‘cyber diplomat’?

I’m an avid consumer of any TV series or podcast that’s even remotely political. I love the drama, intrigue, maneuvering, and most of all, the power. But when it comes to the actual workings of the world of geopolitics, diplomacy, and backroom dealings (those are still a thing, right?), I’m kind of clueless. Then I’m even more oblivious when you throw out the term “cyber diplomat.” Is it a Robocop-esque humanoid with a British judge’s wig? No clue, all I know is it sounds cool. That’s why I went to Tallinn to speak with Estonia’s first Ambassador at Large for…

Facebook has issued a statement on how it removed fake accounts originating from Israel that ran Facebook Pages, Groups and Instagram accounts that carried false information looking to influence elections in several African countries. This forms part of Facebook looking to redeem itself and act proactively in its fight against having its platforms used to spread fake news, especially politically motivated fake news. In its statement, Facebook has said that it noticed “co-ordinated inauthentic behavior” originating from Israel targeting Nigeria, Senegal, Togo, Angola, Niger and Tunisia and that led its staff to investigate further. “Today we removed 265 Facebook and Instagram accounts, Facebook…

Cybercriminals and hackers are more aggressive than ever these days. With advanced technology, breaches are increasingly common, which puts companies and their customers at risk of fraud and identity theft. To avoid this, businesses need to be extra careful with how they handle and store customer data. This isn’t always an easy task, though. To help highlight some approaches that work, we asked the experts of Young Entrepreneur Council the following: What are some good customer data habits companies should have in place in order to limit the amount of damage a hack can do? Here is what they advise: 1. Collect…

GitHub rolls out Patreon-esque feature to let you tip open source developers

May24
by Sindy Cator on May 24, 2019 at 8:40 am
Posted In: Around the Web, Design & Dev

GitHub, one of the largest respositories for hosting open source software, has added the ability to financially support developers through recurring monthly payments. The feature is called GitHub Sponsors, and works similar to funding platforms like Patreon. This allows you to sponsor the work of developers and content creators by paying them a monthly donation. Open source software is essential in pushing technology forward. However, creating open source code isn’t exactly lucrative, so some developers have already turned to other funding platforms to raise money for their work. But by integrating this option right into GitHub, it makes it a…
