Hifiman Jade II Review: This $2,500 headphone sacrifices portability for supreme detail

In the early days of my audio obsession, electrostatic headphones were legendary. Products like Stax’s SR-009 and Sennheiser’s Orpheus HE90 promised higher resolution than was possible with the typical dynamic drivers of the day. But they were woefully impractical, being some of the few headphones to cross the $1,000 mark and requiring a specialized, bulky amplifier. Fast forward to 2019, and the headphone landscape is far more diverse. Dynamic drivers have improved tremendously, planar magnetic headphones are commonplace, and there are more entries in the electrostatic market. To the dismay of our wallets, flagship headphones priced over $1,000 are now the norm, not…

Research indicates the only defense against killer AI is not developing it

A recent analysis on the future of warfare indicates that countries that continue to develop AI for military use risk losing control of the battlefield. Those that don’t risk eradication. Whether you’re for or against the AI arms race: it’s happening. Here’s what that means, according to a trio of experts. Researchers from ASRC Federal, a private company that provides support for the intelligence and defense communities, and the University of Maryland recently published a paper on pre-print server ArXiv discussing the potential ramifications of integrating AI systems into modern warfare. The paper – read here – focuses on the near-future…

The team-up announced last week between gaming’s eternal blood rivals, Microsoft and Sony, came as a surprise to many — including, apparently, Sony’s PlayStation team. Other industry whispers suggest that Nintendo might also be considering a team-up with Microsoft. And while it sounds like blasphemy, the three companies do know each other far better than they know any potential interlopers. According to a report from Bloomberg, Sony did most of their negotiations with Microsoft without informing its internal PlayStation team about the development. When the news hit, the employees who worked on the PlayStation (and the upcoming PS5) were “caught off-guard,”…

I’m walking Huawei: here are 4 great Android phones you can buy instead

Huawei‘s in a spot of bother. Google has suspended its business operations with the Chinese smartphone manufacturer, meaning Huawei no longer has access to Android and a raft of other Google services. So what does this mean for you as a consumer? Well, there’s more info here, but if you already have a Huawei device, it’s not going to receive the latest version of Android. You can keep on using the device (the Google Play store will still work, as will app updates), but the OS itself is going to stay the same. Basically, as long as the company provides…
