Online storage provider Box has acquired YC-backed Streem, a cloud-based filesystem that allowed users to mount virtual drives on their desktops and get streaming access to their files. Streem’s three technologies, which include its filesystem, custom streaming and buffering algorithms, and a video transcoder, will be incorporated into Box. There’s no specific timeline on when Box will integrate Streem’s technology, but it plans to “rapidly” make it happen. Existing Streem users can have their files transitioned over to a Box account, or they can choose to download a ZIP file with their data. The firm will share more information on the migration process in…

The smartphone market is brutal. It destroys companies that can’t keep up and makes established tech juggernauts look like a bumbling startup. It’s harsh, unrelenting and Amazon is getting ready to shoulder its way into the fray. On Wednesday Amazon is expected to reveal its long-rumored smartphone. Judging from the teaser video Amazon released with the event’s announcement, a 3D display is all but a given. Then Jeff Bezos, the company’s CEO, shipped members of the press that are attending the event a book, Mr. Pine’s Purple House. The book is about being different with an emphasis on being purple. Even the note that accompanied the…

Brian Honigman is a marketing consultant, a professional speaker and freelance writer. This post originally appeared on Brian’s blog. GIFs and cinemagraphs are a fun and innovative way for brands to connect with their audience in the era of Tumblr, BuzzFeed and other media platforms attempting to hack the virality of the Internet. GIFs and cinemagraphs are similar pieces of media, but have quite different features and uses. GIFs are image files that are compressed to continually loop the same motions over and over again — basically, a small portion of a video that repeats.
