Wrist-on with the Samsung Gear Live Smartwatch: Finally a smartwatch that’s not embarrassing

Ahead of actually getting a review unit for the new Samsung Gear Live, I was able to grab a few moments with the latest smartwatch from the electronics giant at Google I/O. Running Android Wear, the watch’s OS is still in its infancy, but the form factor is not only comfortable, it looks good. The watch doesn’t have the tell-tale face bulge of previous generations of smartwatches. It’s not as thin as a regular watch, but the design is such that it flows into the band. The metal edge around the face isn’t garish and adds a slight bit of…

Hands-on with the Moto 360: It’s as beautiful as promised

Here at Google I/O today, the company announced that the Moto 360 will be available later this summer, but we managed to find a Moto 360 on the conference floor and spent a few minutes with it. It’s as beautiful as it looked in the very first promotional shots; the screen on the 360 is stunning, bright and vibrant. It’s actually incredible to use in real life because it looks almost exactly like the promo shots which feels unreal. The circular design/interface makes it seem like something you might actually want to wear and the bulk isn’t as big as we thought it would be. The Moto 360 isn’t…

Google rolls out ‘Material Design’ home screens for Docs, Sheets and Slides on the Web

Google’s trio of productivity tools – Docs, Sheets and Slides – are getting all-new home screens on the Web. Whereas before you needed to access them from Google Drive, the company will soon offer a portal for each app at google.com/docs, google.com/sheets and google.com/slides. The sites will use the modern Material Design language unveiled as part of Google’s new ‘L Developer Preview‘ for Android. Each sports a bright block of color at the top, followed by a grid of cards for recently edited documents. Similar to the recently redesigned Google+ app for Android, there’s also a plus icon in the bottom…

For those who didn’t get the chance to tune in to Google I/O 2014 today, here’s a quick recap of everything the company announced. Google began the announcement the same way it does every year – by talking about Android’s growth over the past year. Senior Vice President at Google Sundar Pichai said Android now has more than 1 billion active users per month. Android One Google kicked things off with the announcement of the Android One program to provide guidelines for a unified Android experience for those creating smartphones for the developing market. This allows Google to dictate the minimum hardware…

Google launches a new Gmail API as it outgrows IMAP

Jun25
by Sindy Cator on June 25, 2014 at 6:35 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, Google

As part of its I/O developer conference, Google today announced the launch of a new API for its Gmail service. Eric DeFriez, Google’s technical lead for the API, noted in a blog post that the IMAP standard has worked well for connecting Gmail to email clients, but it isn’t designed for “all of the cool things” that developers want to do with the product. The new API offers granular permissions, such as send-only. It also allows developers to keep track of changes to the inbox. Google also touts significant speed improvements with the API. Find all of our Google I/O…
