Good news for Windows Phone users in the UK – the BBC  has finally brought its iPlayer Radio app to Windows Phone 8, almost two years after it first launched for iPhone. Though iPlayer Radio was available via the main iPlayer mobile app, this sees the standalone version launch for the first time on Microsoft’s mobile operating system. However, as with the main iPlayer app, it seems as though the Radio incarnation for Windows Phone is also a mobile Web wrapper, so it’s not a completely native experience. But it’s finally on Windows Phone, which is a start.    You…

Kim Dotcom’s Megaupload extradition hearing has been delayed again

As the BBC reports, notorious web entrepreneur Kim Dotcom has had his extradition hearing delayed once again. Despite being accused of what’s thought to be the world’s largest copyright-related crime, authorities have failed to go ahead with an official hearing. Dotcom had his Megaupload empire cut short in 2012, when US authorities found that the website was being used to store and share movies in a way deemed as illegal. Following the closure of the popular file-sharing website, Dotcom’s New Zealand mansion was raided by US and New Zealand authorities for potential leads. An application of extradition was then drawn…

After WeChat allowed official account owners to set up shop on Weixin — the version of its popular messaging app offered in China — it is now offering even more options by opening up access to its advertising platform (as first spotted by Tech in Asia). The system is still in open beta and only open to official accounts with more than 100,000 followers, which lets WeChat gather feedback and make necessary improvements. The ads within Weixin will be in the form of a text link at the bottom of an official account page that users already follow (which they have to click through to read),…

MTV creates a new social media-powered music-video chart

Jul07

Posted In: Around the Web, Insider

Global music brand MTV is turning to the global throng of internet users to establish a new socially-powered music-video chart. The Your MTV Top 20 chart will be compiled based on fan interactions with the week’s most popular global music videos from across MTV’s own properties, including websites, social platforms and apps, while also tapping data from The Echo Nest. For the uninitiated, The Echo Nest is a ‘music intelligence’ company that offers products to help developers and media firms integrate rich music data across their products, and was snapped up by Spotify back in March. More specifically, MTV will tap…

Microsoft will discontinue MapPoint and Streets & Trips on December 31, 2014

Microsoft has quietly announced plans to discontinue its MapPoint and Streets & Trips products at the end of this year. Both will be officially killed off on December 31, 2014, though online support for the latter will continue through July 14, 2015. We say “quietly” as we have not been able to find a blog post or otherwise official announcement from Microsoft. Instead, the news comes to us by means of the official Microsoft landing pages for the products: MapPoint and Streets & Trips (via Neowin). Microsoft MapPoint allows users to view, edit, and integrate maps by facilitating the geographical…
