Singapore-based incubator JFDI Asia is popular among startups in Southeast Asia — after all it is a member of Techstar‘s Global Accelerator Network and arguably the premier accelerator in the region. In a first for JFDI this year, it is running three installments of its 100-day bootcamp programs. In total, 353 teams applied to the Class of 2014A that commenced in March, with 13 startups selected. This was eventually narrowed down further to the final 12 startups that presented their ideas to press and investors who attended the program’s demo day today. Each startup received a S$25,000 (US$19,60) cash investment and mentoring services. In another first for JFDI, this accelerator…

While we’re currently drowning in messaging apps, email is still the universal means of communication. You don’t need a proprietary app to send an email. What you do need is support of languages and regional dialects. To get more people connected, Google just announced it’s added 13 new languages to Gmail. The new languages are: Afrikaans, Armenian, Azerbaijani (Azeri), Chinese (Hong Kong), French (Canada), Galician, Georgian, Khmer, Lao, Mongolian, Nepali, Sinhala and Zulu. Google enlisted linguists to ensure that languages actually make sense to native speakers in a specific region. The languages are available today for Web and feature phone users and can…

Review: Intensify Pro photo app offers dazzling quick fix

Photographers always have their favorite go-to fixes when confronted by flawed photos. The first destination is often Photoshop. But there are things Photoshop can’t do easily that propel imaging perfectionists toward more dedicated apps. One of the finest of these is Macphun’s Intensify Pro, which accommodates nearly every image format including raw, PSD (pro version only) and 16-bit images. Try it on the worst picture you have (you know the one) and watch it transform into something at least resembling the scene you actually viewed, as opposed to the one you shot. Some images really can’t be salvaged, of course, but if you only had a…

Vertu, the luxury mobile phone manufacturer that was spun off from Nokia in 2012, has announced it has entered a five-year partnership deal with Bentley. As part of the deal, Vertu and Bentley will work together on a handset slated for an October release. The deal is likely to be aimed at attracting those who appreciate sophistication and craftmanship. With regards to the device’s spec-sheet, nothing has been confirmed. But it will have an emphasis on design and integration with Bentley’s vehicles. A further four devices are planned as part of the partnership.  Thumbnail image credit: Getty Images

What I learned from building my first physical product and mobile game without code

Len Kendall is the founder of CentUp. Prior to starting a company, he worked in PR where he helped put out fires and manage digital communications. “Software may be eating the world,” but there’s still something extremely rewarding about making a physical product. Like most of the people reading this blog post, I’ve spent most of my career on digital endeavors, from websites to words and PowerPoint decks. Alongside those digital properties, I was also into games. I began to notice the zombification of smartphone users who constantly walk around with their heads down, glued to a screen. This summer, I felt inspired to design my own smartphone game and decided…
