Belle Beth Cooper is a co-founder of Exist, a personal analytics platform to help you track and understand your life. This article originally appeared on her personal blog. One of the most common questions I get asked as a writer/blogger/content marketer is where I get my ideas from. Publishing as often as I do (multiple times per week, up to every weekday sometimes), ideas are certainly something I need a lot of. Since people seem interested in how this works for me, I thought I’d share some of the ways that work best for me (so far—it’s always a work in progress!). TED talks…

Ridesharing service Lyft just announced that it will enter the New York City market on Friday at 7pm Eastern, but it’s avoiding Manhattan in favor of the Brooklyn and Queens boroughs. Lyft noted that it is launching first in the areas of New York that are “vastly underserved by public transit options.” The company claims to have undertaken a screening process for all NYC drivers that is more stringent than the city’s taxi companies. New passengers can enjoy two weeks of free rides in New York as a launch promotion. In somewhat related news, the New York Attorney General announced…

Getting a copyright notice from a law firm can be scary. Getting a fake one that contains a trojan horse and could potentially steal your data is terrifying and it’s been happening in Germany. According to TorrentFreak approximately 30,000 fake emails citing copyright violations regarding tracks from Jay-Z, Sepultura and others have been sent to unsuspecting Germans. What makes the emails seem legitimate is that they include details from actual law firms that are known to send these types of emails to offenders. Here is a sample of the emails being set: This is a warning because of your violation of…

Gone are the days when companies contemplated the benefits of engaging in real time, two-way conversations on social media. Even in 2012, 73 percent of Fortune 500 companies were already active on Twitter. The journey toward building a brand that consumers trust is pursued through one steadfast principle: the ultimate humanization of the brand. Today, this journey takes place almost 100 percent on social media. We often forget that behind every tweet, post, pin or hashtag are individuals:…

Facebook is testing location-based business Page rankings

Like Twitter, Facebook is testing various features on select users and businesses.  Inside Facebook reports on one such test: The ranking of businesses in a certain geographic area. The gist is that businesses in a town, or wider geographic area, are ranked based on user reviews. It’s like Yelp, except you would be given a number. Facebook told TNW that it is testing the feature and it had nothing else to share. But if it does go live, it could offer valuable insight into how a community sees your business. It’s great if your auto parts store is ranked number one in your area. But…
