You’ve heard of electronic picture frames. Here’s something that looks somewhat similar in concept, but diverges wildly in execution. It’s Electric Objects’ EO1, a self-contained computer that mounts on your wall or tabletop to display your choice of framed art. Launched today as a Kickstarter campaign, Electric Objects seeks to use the Internet as a source for visual art that’s designed to be integrated into your home or office and enjoyed in the same way as any other painting, sculpture or art object. “I think people are generally unhappy with a digital experience characterized by distraction, demands on our attention and anxiety,” Electric Objects founder and…

odyssey
Cloud-based mapping service CartoDB has released a beta version of a new tool, Odyssey.js, that lets you create interactive maps in Markdown without knowing how to code. The open source tool lets you choose from three interface templates: slide, scrolling and timeline. You’ll then use a Markdown sandbox to specify different places and events in your story, as well as add content, such as text or images. When you’re ready to share, you can embed the map as an iFrame, grab a custom URL, or download the source. If you do know how to code, CartoDB has included a JavaScript library so developers can…

manything
Manything, a cloud-based video monitoring service that allows you to use old iOS devices as security cameras around your home, has released a new version of its app today which brings new functionality and support for its freshly-launched IFTTT channel. Announced today, the new app allows users to set motion sensitivity, define motion detection zones and directly view a live stream or recorded footage from an iPhone. And if your power or WiFi connection fails you, there’s a continuous recording fallback mode that can be activated. You can either watch live streams in real-time or replay a recording by jumping to key…

Leaked render reportedly outs Samsung’s Oculus-powered Gear VR headset

Samsung and Oculus VR are believed to be working on a virtual reality headset together, with Oculus providing the software and Samsung producing the hardware. SamMobile has obtained a reported render of the headset, which is said to be called the Gear VR and could launch at the IFA 2014 trade show in September. From the looks of it, users will plug in their own Galaxy smartphones to use the device, relying on the phone’s sensors to power the head-tracking system. The headset also appears to have a trackpad on top and a “see-through button” for activating a camera to view…
