Verizon has introduced new Network Optimization guidelines to help ease network congestion. That’s a fancy way of saying that if you’re in the top five percent of LTE data users and you have an unlimited data plan on Verizon, expect to get throttled starting in October. But only for a little while. t’s actually not as horrible as it sounds, at least according to Verizon’s post about the matter. The Network Optimization will only go into effect during the following scenario: If you’re in an area with high network demand and you’re one of the top five percent of data users…

This post originally appeared on the Buffer blog. Whenever I find myself doing research for new social media tips, the studies and resources I find are always fascinating. Not only is the intense depth of academia inspiring, the methods that researchers use for collecting information are so intriguing. I often wish I could be involved in studies like these, just so I can take the tests, try the quizzes, and see how I’d be evaluated. Some of the most fun ones to consider are those that involve different types of social sharing. They seek to prove a hypothesis, yet at the same time, they all…

With timing that’s, well odd, Bose has filed suit against the almost-owned by Apple, Beats Electronics alleging the company infringes on four of Bose’s patents pertaining to noise canceling for headphones. The suit is seeking financial damages and an injunction. The headphones in question are the Beats Studio and Beats Studio Wireless, both of which include a noise canceling feature. Via Recode

Google today launched a new community site to help improve Google Translate, its free online language translation service. Aimed at language connoisseurs and professional translators, it can be used to rate and compare existing translations, as well as create new ones and match words to their correct counterparts. Over time, Google said it will give contributors more ways to pitch in and offer better “visibility” regarding how the submissions are being used to improve its translation tools. “We will also localize Community pages to support your preferred display language,” Google added in a blog post. The new Community site follows a…

What developers must do to make in-app purchases morally responsible

Mat Peterson is the founder of Shiny Things, a Sydney based app development company building educational apps aligned with educational curriculums. In-app purchases (IAPs) aren’t popular with parents. Cases of children racking up hundreds of dollars worth of IAPs, unwittingly funded by their parents’ bank accounts, are becoming increasingly common. You don’t have to look far to find horror stories about IAPs. Apple was forced to pay nearly $32.5 million to a group of parents in the US after complaints their kids had amassed huge bills through IAPs made without consent. Similarly, Ilana Imber-Gluck has filed a class action suit against…
