August was an exciting month for a number of African companies, with a batch of funding rounds, acquisitions and new product offerings. Funding and acquisitions International voice messaging company Kirusa acquired Ghanaian instant messaging (IM) app provider Saya Mobile. Saya Mobile provides services specifically for African consumers, but Kirusa has now acquired the technology, intellectual property and workforce of the company and will put it to work on Kirusa’s mobile apps. In another high-profile acquisition, South African e-commerce platform Takealot bought online design retailer Superbalist.com. Takealot received US$100 million in funding from Tiger Global Management in May for further expansion…

Apple Hosts Its Worldwide Developers Conference

An alleged breach in Apple’s iCloud service may be to blame for countless leaks of private celebrity photos this week. On Monday, a Python script emerged on GitHub (which we’re not linking to as there is evidence a fix by Apple is not fully rolled out) that appears to have allowed malicious users to ‘brute force’ a target account’s password on Apple’s iCloud, thanks to a vulnerability in the Find My iPhone service. Brute-force attacks consist of using a malicious script to repeatedly guess passwords in an attempt to discover the correct one. BBC reveals new coding and computing content to tie-in with new UK school curriculum

The BBC has today introduced a range of computing and coding-related shows, games and competitions for kids designed to help improve their understanding and enjoyment of the subjects. BBC Children and BBC Learning hope that the new resources will help kids to become more involved in computer science, a desire shared by the UK government, which has introduced new coding and computer elements to the UK’s education curriculum. The Beeb’s additional content coincides with the launch of this new curriculum this week, and incorporates different activities, aimed at primary and secondary school level children.
