OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We had months in advance to prep for the launch of Samsung’s latest Note device, but when the Gear VR headset popped up on the radar last month, it actually did something we hadn’t felt about Samsung in a while. The Samsung Gear VR is a stripped down version of the Oculus Rift, relying on the Galaxy Note 4 as the screen to power your virtual realm. All you have to do is insert the phone into the dedicated slot up front, strap the headset on…

Samsung Galaxy Note Edge hands-on: Curved OLED never looked so cool

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The idea of a curved screen isn’t particularly new: Sony, LG and Samsung have all unveiled curved OLED televisions at past CES events, but it appears the trend hasn’t quite caught with the general market. So will shrinking the technology down to a phablet-sized device finally excite the market? That’s exactly what the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge hopes to do by adding a gentle curve that wraps around the right side of a Note smartphone. The extra strip of screen real estate, also known as the Edge Panel, lets you customize tickers for notifications, such as weather and time updates, sports scores, or…

Sony today unveiled the SmartWatch 3, its first device running Android Wear. The GPS-enabled wearable comes with a square 1.6-inch display, 4GB of internal storage and a 420mAh battery. The company’s previous efforts ran on its own platform and, for all intents and purposes, never took off. The software was lacklustre and the poor app selection made them difficult to recommend. It’s hardly surprising, therefore, to see the company jump to Android Wear, a platform managed by Google and already available on a range of smartwatches, thereby ensuring developer support. Sony’s SmartWatch 3 is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core ARM A7…

compactfeat

Sony today unveiled the Xperia Z3 Compact, a smaller version its latest flagship smartphone. Unlike most Android OEMs, which position “mini” handsets as mid-range alternatives, Sony’s aim is to make the Xperia Z3 Compact a no-compromise device. The specs bode well, for the most part. It’s powered by a blisteringly fast 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor – the same one found in its larger sibling – 2GB of RAM and offers 16GB of internal storage. Inside is a 2600 mAh battery, which is larger than the Xperia Z1 Compact (2300 mAh) and other, similarly sized handsets such as the Moto…
