Every June and December, social media strategist Vincenzo Cosenza updates his “world map of social networks” to show what the most popular service is in every country. The latest update, for July 2014, reveals that Facebook now dominates 130 of the 137 countries worldwide tracked by Alexa. In the last report, Facebook was king of 128 countries. The social networking giant has since conquered Latvia, dethroning Draugiem, and Moldova, where Odnoklassniki was the leader. Back in December 2012, there were only four other social networks that were first in at least one country, and while this number has fluctuated a…

Pinterest has released a new Chrome extension, Pinterest Tab, that replaces the New Tab window of your browser with a random photo based on your interests. Artsy, 500px and National Geographic Your Shot serve as the sources for the visual inspiration. When you first load the extension, Pinterest has you choose from a range of topics, including photography, cats, fashion, design and art. You can, of course, click to pin the photo to your own board if you like. The page also includes calendar and weather data. Pinterest Tab also hooks your browser into the main service, so you can…

silicon valley hbo

Jeffrey Lyon is the founder of Black Lotus. Everything looks easier on TV. From the safety of your couch, you know you are a better singer than the contestants on “The X Factor.” You are a tougher cook than those on “Hell’s Kitchen,” and you would be a far better entrepreneur than those cash-strapped startups on “Shark Tank” or the fictional hopefuls on “Silicon Valley.” Life is different once you leave your couch and real-world stages; kitchens and startups aren’t as easy to master as they seem on screen. I don’t know whether reality TV is creating a deluge of…

language

The so-called ‘Google of Russia’ Yandex has rolled out a new update to its translation app this week, bringing offline access to its users around the world. While Google Translate already features offline mode for translations on Android, the iOS incarnation requires connectivity. So with Yandex.Translate for iOS, the Russian internet giant is could be looking to one-up its Californian counterpart. For now, offline mode works for five language combinations – English-German, English-French, English-Italian, English-Spanish and English-Russian. So, if an English-speaker travels to France, they’ll only need to download the one translation database for that language. If they then travel…

Jordan Roland is a staff designer/illustrator for the Shutterstock blog. This post was originally published on the Shutterstock blog and has been reprinted with permission. Music and visuals go hand in hand, frequently exploring and influencing one another. When making a lyric video, both forms need to be considered — timing every syllable to the split second the artist says the word is a difficult yet rewarding process. I was recently asked to work on the new lyric video for Cobra Starship’s “Never Been in Love” (feat. Icona Pop) with director Randy Scott Slavin. Going in to this shoot, there was…
