Google today announced its plans to sunset the SHA-1 cryptographic hash algorithm as Chrome uses it in certificate signatures for HTTPS. The company hopes to start the process later this month with version 39′s release in November and finish it when Chrome 41 arrives in Q1 2015. When the CA/Browser Forum published their Baseline Requirements for SSL in 2011, SHA-1 was essentially deprecated. In other words, CAs have long been told to move away from SHA-1. Google Chrome will hopefully encourage those straggling behind to hurry up. Here is the timeline for using the HTTPS security indicator to highlight that…

Chinese ecommerce company Alibaba has updated its IPO filing with the SEC to include a price range for the offering: $60-$66 a share. The numbers were first reported by The Wall Street Journal earlier in the day. Since Alibaba expects to have 2.47 billion ordinary shares outstanding after the IPO, today’s pricing window pegs the company’s valuation between $148-163 billion. The company stands to raise as much as $21 billion by going public. As such, Alibaba is on track to have the largest stock offering in history. ➤ Alibaba F-1 Thumbnail image credit: STR / AFP / Getty Images

Google has announced a settlement with a coalition of photographers over use of their work in its Google Books scanning project. The photographers first filed suit against Google in 2010. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but all parties are said to be “pleased” with the agreement, which includes funding for the PLUS Coalition for better image licensing. Google Books has caused a world of legal trouble for the company. In 2012, Google settled an extended disagreement with book publishers over the project. Last year, it emerged victorious over the Authors Guild, which filed an appeal earlier this…

The Moto 360 smartwatch went on sale in the US today at noon EST. 2 hours and 25 minutes later, and Motorola has already announced that it is sold out, while Best Buy and Google Play online stores are also displaying “Out of Stock” messages. “Unfortunately, Moto 360 is currently sold out on Motorola.com,” the company confirmed. “Availability may be limited for a while due to high demand.” Naturally, Motorola didn’t discuss how much supply it had, so it’s unclear whether the device really is selling well. If you’re interested in buying the $250 gadget as soon as it’s available,…

Facebook today announced it has simplified the developer experience for integrating apps with the social network. You can try out the new app registration flow now: quickstarts. In the original app-creation flow, developers had to find and download the latest SDKs, create a Facebook App ID, enable the platform they were building for, copy and paste certain information between the docs and their development environment, plus read documentation at the same time. The new app registration flow adds interactive guides (only display the relevant steps for a given app) to lead developers through the process for iOS, Android, Websites and…
