Apple_Oct_2014_82

At its event in Cupertino today, Apple announced the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus. Both devices will ship on September 19 and will be available for pre-order on September 12. By the end of 2014, Apple hopes to have the new iPhones available in 115 countries. Normally the company lists how many carriers it plans to launch the devices on, but this time it did not. The iPhone 6 comes in three flavors: 16GB will set you back $199, 64GB will cost you $299, and there’s a new 128GB version at $399. This is on a two-year contract,…

Apple’s iPhone event off to a shaky start as tech problems plague live viewers

Apple’s event today to introduce its next generation iPhone was hit with problems right from the start as live viewers were left unable to tune into the event. Despite offering a live stream for viewers using Apple hardware, it’s currently not working for many users around the world – including some of the TNW team. Naturally, users reported problems immediately via Twitter.     At the beginning of the event, two music tracks were playing simultaneously and other users reported Chinese audio translation on the occasions that the stream did work. On others, the stream simply played on a loop. You can keep…

The App Store now boasts 1.3 million iOS apps

The number of apps available in the App Store has risen to 1.3 million, Apple announced today. The figure is up from 1.2 million, which the company revealed at its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in June. It’s an impressive number that shouldn’t be overlooked. While some growth is almost inevitable, the sheer number and breadth of apps in the App Store has always been a massive weapon for Apple – and provided it keeps climbing, it’s only going to look more attractive to new and existing iOS users. Of course, quantity doesn’t always mean quality, although some would argue that the…

Apple_Oct_2014_197

Apple is back with the latest iteration of its wildly successful smartphone, the iPhone. Today, the company introduced two new models: The 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus. Both models sport curved edges and rounded corners, creating a more unified and welcoming design. Apple says the back has been constructed from anodized aluminium and features a premium, stainless steel Apple emblem. The iPhone 6 is the smaller of the two new handsets, with a 4.7-inch display and a 1334 x 750 pixel resolution. Meanwhile, the iPhone 6 Plus sports a larger 5.5-inch panel and a more pixel-dense 1920…

Google today unveiled Applause, a new Hangouts on Air feature that allows viewers to give a ‘thumbs up’ or ‘thumbs down’ during broadcasts. In a screenshot (below), you can see a chart in the lower quadrant of the video ‘Hangout’ simulating audience feedback in real-time. The orbs shift position vertically and are colored green, blue, pink and red to denote how people’s opinions are changing. As the viewer, you can hammer either a green or red thumbs up/down icon at the bottom of the screen to participate. Applause follows two other features, Live Q&A and Showcase, that have evolved the…
