"Alvin Greene, South Carolina's Democrat candidate for the U.S. Senate in 2010, is driving the state's party crazy, by doing what BP's CEO did on Capitol Hill on June 17: Saying very little and letting the politicians hang themselves by their own foolishness." ~ Yasha Harari

Icons form the backbone of interface design — for products and apps as well as for the Web. 500 Startups-backed Iconfinder offers designers a way to search for just the right high-quality icons for their projects. Today, those users can choose a new way of doing business — a subscription plan. With the launch of subscription-based Iconfinder Pro, freelancers, agencies and design teams can now ditch receipts, license management issues and swapping credit cards for one of four subscription levels. Previously, only credit card payments were available. Iconfinder Pro is targeted to professional design teams who work on multiple projects involving numerous iterations and prototyping. The subscription…

Lauren deLisa Coleman is a digi-culture trend analyst specializing in the convergence of popular culture, emerging tech and the impact on business and governance. This post originally appeared on the Geckoboard blog. For a job title that barely existed three years ago, the role of a data scientist and the data-driven strategies they develop have become crucial tools for today’s marketing executives. In fact, according to a recent study by KPMG, more that half of the CFOs and CIOs polled said that big data was drastically changing their business strategies. We’re swimming in a sea full of data. The key is…

Cinamatic, the video recording, editing and filter app from Hipstamatic, now gives you the option to shoot footage in a widescreen 16:9 format. Whereas before the app was focused on square-crop videos, similar to Instagram and Vine, it now appears to be targeting a more professional or enthusiast audience. Not only can you shoot in 16:9, but you can also export your finished videos to YouTube and Vimeo – two sites tailored for this aspect ratio. Hipstamatic says the app has breached the 1 million user mark, which suggests it’s slowly gaining traction amongst the iOS community. Both Vine and…

Ticketmaster and its parent company Live Nation Entertainment have announced the acquisition of Eventjoy, a Y Combinator startup focusing on do-it-yourself mobile ticketing and event management. The deal is a quick turnaround for Eventjoy, which just launched this spring. The company will help Ticketmaster compete with upstart Eventbrite for the independent event space. Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino put it this way: We’re always looking to expand Ticketmaster into ticketing segments that we believe our leading brand and expertise can have a meaningful impact. The DIY space is one where we think Eventjoy’s leading mobile-first solution can be combined with the scale of our platform and distribution…

Facebook announced today that it has added user feedback to its algorithm for displaying ads in your news feed. Previously, the service took into account whether an ad was hidden by a user, but now it will also listen to why it was hidden. For instance, Facebook will be more quick to stop showing ads that are labeled as offensive and inappropriate. The company’s tests found that doing so reduced the number of ads that were reported as offensive.
