Last week it was Spotify announcing video ads. This week, it’s Flipboard’s turn to launch them. The news was first announced back in August, but testing for full-screen videos ads kick off today with big-name brands such as Gucci, Chrysler, Sony Pictures, Conrad Hotels & Resorts. You’ll see the video ads as you swipe through the content, and may include ones like this, for Sony Pictures’ Fury. Thankfully, you will have to click to play the ads. ➤ Flipboard Presses Play on Full-Page Video Ads | AdAge

Kickstarter is now accepting project submissions from creators in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Ireland, ahead of the launch of the new public-facing Scandinavian and Irish projects on October 21. The company said it wanted to give users in these four countries enough time to get their projects up to scratch before opening them up to the public for potential financial backing. That said, there won’t be specific Scandinavian and Irish-only Kickstarter project pages, but it is possible to filter search results by location. Naturally, as with existing Kickstarter projects, backers can be located anywhere in the world. Kickstarter said there…

Flickr, one of the first Web-based social networks dedicated to photography, today launched a new program recognizing emerging young photographers. Flickr 20under20 focuses on Flickr’s photographers age 20 and younger and rewards the top 20. The new program, as outlined in Yahoo’s Tumblr blog, is designed to support and promote what Flickr sees as the up-and-coming photography community of the future. It’s also a recognition that photographers are getting younger and that digital photography has effectively removed the barriers to visual experimentation. “Some 15 to 20 years ago, to explore photography you had to be older, you had to have money to experiment,…

Following rumors of a potential acquisition, Microsoft has today confirmed that it will be purchasing Mojang, the developer of the insanely popular Minecraft game, for $2.5 billion. As noted, the move isn’t unexpected, but it is a notable one for a company struggling to break into the mobile market in a big way, and one that’s also embroiled in a ‘console war’ with Sony’s PlayStation 4. To put the popularity of the game into perspective, Minecraft has been purchased more than 16.5 million times by Mac and PC users alone. It’s also available on a range of consoles and other…

WikiLeaks has today released copies of ‘weaponized malware’ used by various governments around the world to snoop on individuals. The FinFisher software is no stranger to controversy – it’s marketed as surveillance software, but propogates and gains access to victim’s systems using common malware techniques. As well as compromising desktop computers, it’s also used to spy on mobile communications from Android, iOS and BlackBerry devices too. “FinFisher continues to operate brazenly from Germany selling weaponised surveillance malware to some of the most abusive regimes in the world. The Merkel government pretends to be concerned about privacy, but its actions speak otherwise,”…
