OpiaTalkLogo

Tom Popomaronis knows the power of LinkedIn. After launching OpiaTalk last year, he needed traction for his social commerce widget, which converts organic Web traffic to drive opt-in leads. Multiple InMail messages later, he had signed Skype as his first client. That partnership allowed Skype to use OpiaTalk’s “widget-as-a-service” (a WaaS, if you will) to schedule promotions for users to earn 20 percent off of Skype gift cards. While the promotion was running, OpiaTalk converted organic traffic for Skype’s gift card sales at a rate that was four to five times higher than the industry average. Now, his widget’s going global….

The iPhone 6 Plus really isn’t THAT big

iPhone 6 Plus

I picked up an iPhone 6 Plus from my local Apple Store this morning. Like most people, I hadn’t seen it ‘in the flesh’ before I reserved it (let alone before I paid for it) but I thought it was notable enough a device to spend some quality time with over the next year, seeing how Apple and its ecosystem of developers adapt to the phablet form factor. I’m taking the 6 Plus on a European road trip (well, an air and rail trip really) next week where I’ll try to make it my only device, replacing even my laptop….

US-TELECOM-NOKIA-SMARTPHONES

Slowly but surely, Microsoft is bringing everything related to Nokia’s devices and services division inside its own corporate structure. The company’s latest move is to shift this part of its business away from Nokia.com and over to a new home managed underneath Microsoft.com. At the moment this only affects the UK version of Nokia’s website, although it’s likely other geographical variants will follow in the future. The Nokia.com site is still live for people in the UK, but you’ll find that accessing most pages will simply redirect you to the new Microsoft portal. We’ve moved to a new home! Everything you…

Citysocializer, the mobile and Web-based app that helps you tap into social gatherings in your locale, is finally expanding beyond its UK roots to launch in its first international city: New York City. Founded in 2007 as Citysocialising by former BBC producer Sanchita Saha, the app rebranded as Citysocializer last year, just as it introduced its first native mobile app. As for how it works, you basically tag your profile with what you like and the neighbourhoods and cities you frequent. You can then liaise with like-minded people for meetups, or view other ‘Socials’ already happening nearby.     Following a…

Getty Images today launched an app called Stream that makes it easy for any iPhone or iPad user to browse, save and share photos uploaded by its community of professional photographers. The home feed is split into horizontal shards that represent individual collections, such as news, entertainment, latest and sports. Tap through and you’ll see a vertical stream of photos, along with an icon in the top left-hand corner for viewing them as a full-screen slideshow. You can also press and hold on any image to access a wheel of secondary options, which include sharing through connected apps, favoriting, a gyroscope…
