Iodine, a platform for finding out which drugs really work best for users, has launched in the US in a bid to bring more transparency to consumer choices in the pharmaceutical industry. The company was founded in July last year and has since then been working on increasing its database of drug knowledge ahead of its public launch. Today, it has results from more than 100,000 surveys (carried out in the US using Google Consumer Surveys) to help users better understand the real life experiences of people who have used the drugs. The platform also looks at other factors, like price,…

Adobe is closing its research and development operations in China in a move that could see as many as 400 employees made redundant. The company isn’t pulling out of Greater China altogether — it will retain six sales offices across China, Hong Kong and Taiwan — but its R&D branch for the region will close down before the end of the year, a spokesperson told The Next Web. The news was initially reported by Chinese site Caixin, which speculated the job loss numbers. Adobe did not confirm exactly how many of its Chinese staff will be laid off, but it did say that…

Science Inc., an LA-based group that invests in and builds media and ecommerce companies, has announced the acquisition of mobile gaming ad network PlayHaven from the Upsight analytics service. Upsight was created earlier this year as the product of a merger between PlayHaven and Kontagent. Now, the company has decided to shed the advertising side in order to focus on Kontagent’s marketing business. Andy Yang, Upsight’s CEO, outlined two main reasons for the decision to sell off the ad network: focus and neutrality. Upsight has benefitted from the combination of PlayHaven’s marketing tools and Kontagent, and now it’s ready to…

Xiaomi invested $25 million in iHealth Labs earlier this week, and already it has gadgets to show for it. Today the Chinese company unveiled a smartphone dock that turns your phone into a medical measurement machine. Updated: Xiaomi contacted TNW to explain that iHealth Labs owns the iHealth trademark. This article has been updated accordingly, a fuller explanation can be found at the bottom of the story. The dock — which is rather incredibly branded as iHealth, inviting further comparisons/Apple copycat claims — will be available for 199 Chinese yuan (that’s about $33) and is accompanied by an app. Together they track…

Microsoft has today announced that the Lumia 735 will be available in the UK from October 2, and it’ll be the first handset to arrive running Microsoft’s Cortana digital assistant. Priced from around £20 on contract (we’re still awaiting confirmation of a SIM-free price), the device was first announced three weeks ago, alongside a dual-SIM, non-LTE variant. Key specs include the Windows Phone 8.1 operating system (with Lumia Denim), a 4.7-inch 720p OLED display, a 1.2GHz quad-core CPU, 8GB of onboard storage (with microSD support) and a 6.7-megapixel camera. Microsoft has also taken into account the recent selfie craze and included…
