Twitter invests $10 million in new MIT Laboratory for Social Machines

Twitter has announced a new academic partnership with MIT that includes a five-year $10 million commitment to a new Laboratory for Social Machines. The university will also have access, via Twitter’s own Gnip data firm, to all public tweets ever sent. The new lab will focus on building technology in two areas: “grounded semantics and network analysis” and “pattern discovery, data visualization, and mobile app technologies.” Here’s Twitter’s own description of how MIT will use its data: The Laboratory for Social Machines anticipates using Twitter data to investigate the rapidly changing and intersecting worlds of news, government and collective action. Facebook working to update its Real Name policy enforcement following outrage from LGBT community

It looks like Facebook is working on adjusting the enforcement of its Real Name policy. the company also apologized to the LGBT community in general, and drag queen performance artists in particular, on how the rule had been enforced. Such rules were too restrictive and locked performers out of their legitimate accounts. ARM today announced mbed IoT Device Platform, a new operating system designed for microcontrollers in connected devices. As GigaOm notes, the new mbed OS replaces the fragmented proprietary software that developers have been running on ARM’s chips. Partners will have free access to mbed OS later this year, with the first devices featuring the software expected to go on sale in 2015. ARM will also offer an mbed Device Server that developers can license to provide server-side support for IoT devices. The third piece of the initiative is the community-driven mbed.org resource site.
